Oral history is generally reliable within a three-generation callback time period

Reliable historical information about individuals and events generally relies on three-generation call back. Having access to testimony from eyewitnesses, people who know the eyewitnesses, or people who knew the people who knew the eyewitnesses only persists for about 120 years, or through the lifespans of three generations.

Histories by Herodotus was composed about 50-60 years after the events of the Greco-Persian wars, when Herodotus was still able to interview surviving veterans, or people who knew the veterans of the wars.

The Analects of Confucious was composed either by students of Confucious, or by students of his students, so it falls within the window of reliable oral tradition about Confucious.

The stories of King Arthur have a very tenuous and loose connection to a British war chieftan who fought the Anglo-Saxon invaders in the 6th century. The King Arthur tales were composed more than 500 years after this individual lived, making them obviously a legendary genre of writing.

but if direct eyewitnesse countertest your theory, you discount them.

I believe people are seeing unidentified aerial phenomena.

I just don't think the best explanation is that they are observing intergalactic spaceships piloted by aliens.

Seems his "agenda" is knowing things.

Histories from the ancient world describe lives and events known to have happened both from plural sources and surviving evidence. Reports of UFO sightings are of isolated occurrences typically lacking evidence for which the better response, in my opinion, is to say, "keeping an open mind pending proof one way or the other."

THE AGENDA:

cypress is trying to keep christianity cultlike by making the reality of miracles a debate point, instead of teaching the golden rule.

Your assumption is that everyone who sees an unidentified aerial phenomena actually leaps to the conclusion that they are witnessing interstellar spaceships piloted by aliens.

I always give serious weight to eyewitness testimony reported by multiple people.

I don't think everyone is lying who saw something strange on Loch Ness or in up in the atmosphere. You have to consider if the best explanation for these observations are really a freshwater aquatic dinosaur and intergalactic spaceships piloted by aliens.

unless its off your narrative.

then you call them stupid and obviously wrong based on your preconceived notions.

you're not extra thoughtful.

you're basically an idiotic dog fucker.

Feel free if you want to believe unidentified aerial phenomena are intergalactic spaceships.

There are five billion smart phones on the planet, at this point there should be crystal clear and unambiguous video records of alien spaceships.

I don't think most people are lying about seeing weird things in the atmosphere. But the testimony is not good enough to leap to the conclusion there are intergalactic spaceships flying around the atmosphere.

In my experience,
oral history is unreliable for a story told at the beginning of a social gathering
to its being retold toward the end of the affair.

Ideally, we need multiple witnesses, and remembering what score someone got in their golf game last week, is not as important to historians as reliable testimony about who won at the Battle of Marathon, or whether Julius Caesar was murdered by assassination.

Perhaps historians need to take a look at their priorities.
The first time that I broke 80, I alerted the media.

Right, no conclusions.

He's right that if a substantial number of the reports were accurate we would have evidentiary proof by now, but the probable falsity of the vast majority of reports doesn't mean or logically suggest that all are false.
