The Oxford dictionary says atheism is the belief there are no deities.

It's rare that I run across a committed message board atheist who isn't a scientific materialist.

Once one starts talking about a transcendent reality, spirituality, and a reality beyond atomic matter and energy, they are really starting to veer off into quasi-religious traditions of transcendentalism, natural religion, spiritual beliefs.

Agreed. However, those emotions need to be coupled, or tempered, with intelligence. Reason. Reason should always rule our emotions, not the other way around.

While I think human beings have a long way to go in terms of evolving as an intelligent lifeform, we appear to be at the top of the pyramid on Earth.
