You can certainly lean to cook, and still go out when you please. Nothing forces you to cook! You were allowed around a hot stove at 8 years of age?
I ate in restaurants until I was married.
I have to admit that there were times that I wished I could cook but my father told me years ago that if I learned to cook, I would be doing a lot of it so I never learned.
I can grill steaks outside but my family says I overcook the meat so they do the grilling.
It's also rather fun! You can learn to create your own recipes and and unique flavors. It's certainly more than just grilling!
It really just takes practice. Get a good book on how to cook, that describes the materials used and their characteristics. Something like this one. It's amazing what you do with flour, eggs, a bit of shortening or butter or oil or baking powder, some salt, sugar, and other seasonings.
Like fries? Cut 'em up from your favorite potato, soak 'em in hot water for 30 minutes (removes the starch and cooks them a bit), then put 'em in a bowl, add a bit of oil and seasonings and toss, then spread 'em out on a sheet and cook at 450 for 15-20 minutes. All you really need is potatoes and seasoning. Try it next time you grill hamburgers and hot dogs. Try salt, pepper, and garlic for seasoning and go from there! Some people like paprika or thyme on 'em.
I make my own fruit and cream pies, pizza, fries, stroganoff, tacos, BBQ chicken or ribs, breakfast hashbrowns, etc.
I didn't learn it all at once. Just one at a time. Don't let it daunt you. I've made my share of 'questionable food'! It's part of learning.
