Even the chemist who developed he conventional explosive to trigger the bomb, Kistiakowsky, was Russian born. There was also a huge British contingent, who were not all of British birth.

There were many at Los Alamos who were applying for US citizenship, while they developed he nuclear bomb.

The Nazis certainly considered Bethe Jewish, but he was raised Protestant religiously, and German culturally. Like many Germans, he was shocked when he was suddenly not wanted in Germany, because of some Jewish ancestry.

The bomb needed material. For example:

The Mallinckrodt Chemical Company in St. Louis MO became the first mass production uranium ore refiner in the world. Mallinckrodt worked out the processes in about six months and started mass refining uranium into usable oxides, fluoride gas (UF6) , and metal. The company was producing in a day what Germany was in a year by 1944.

Mallinckrodt's refining processes were made national security secrets almost immediately. Safety issues abounded. Workers didn't recognize or know the dangers of the material they were working with--often because they ignored safety briefings--while the company was focused on production first.

Chemists found a way to extract boron from graphite making it suitable as a nuclear reactor moderator. This made mass production of plutonium possible, which in turn meant the US could build dozens, hundreds, of nuclear bombs rather than a mere handful using uranium alone.

It was this sort of thing that represented something like 90% of getting to a working bomb.
