While the UK is certainly a leader, they removed themselves from being a major player by leaving the EU. I see the EU as the more likely leader of Western democracies since they have more to lose due to their proximity to Putin's Russia.

United States wasn't in EU, and led the western democracies for seven decades until Trump.

I think politically and realistically, you have to have a nuclear power be the leader of the Western democracies. Only a nuclear power has the credibility to be an ultimate deterrent. That leaves only UK and France as options.
