this is insane. Section 1324 title 8 says it's a federal felony to encourage illegals to live here. So they had a legal obligation to evict them. On top of that, these illegal alien squatters were not paying their rent!

march 5 2025 A Chicago landlord has been instructed to pay more than $80,000 to a tenant couple after he threatened to call Immigration and Customs Enforcement on them.

Marco Antonio Contreras and his wife, Denise Contreras, were the first people to be charged under the 2019 Immigrant Tenant Protection Act. The law forbids landlords from evicting tenants solely because of their immigration status or otherwise threatening to report tenants' immigration status to threaten or retaliate against them.
The couple praised the ruling in a statement.

“We decided not to stay silent because our landlords threatened us with calling immigration, and we do not believe that anyone has a right to threaten us,” the couple said in the statement. “No one should feel or act superior to others. We are all equals and deserve respect. Just because someone is your landlord does not mean that they get to do whatever they want to you.”
In the case of the Contreras couple, the tenants filed the lawsuit after the landlords threatened to report them to ICE if they didn't pay the desired rent by a certain time.

Here is the law:

https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/1324

(A)Any person who—

(iv)encourages or induces an alien to come to, enter, or reside in the United States, knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such coming to, entry, or residence is or will be in violation of law; or
(v)
(I)engages in any conspiracy to commit any of the preceding acts, or
(II)aids or abets the commission of any of the preceding acts,
shall be punished as provided in subparagraph (B).

(B)A person who violates subparagraph (A) shall, for each alien in respect to whom such a violation occurs—

(iv)in the case of a violation of subparagraph (A)(i), (ii), (iii), (iv), or (v) resulting in the death of any person, be punished by death or imprisoned for any term of years or for life, fined under title 18, or both.

It is interesting that you are defending his right to THREATEN to call ICE. He was blackmailing, not informing on.

It is interesting that you posted that Barr destroyed evidence.

Where is your proof, Rarely Right Walter?

They should have paid their rent.
They should not pay rent on an apartment they were not allowed access to. The landlord was selling the building, and told them to leave the illegal apartment before the end of the month. They reasonably agreed, but also reasonably asked to pay only for the part of the month they were allowed to stay. The landlord demanded rent for time he would not be renting the apartment.

Besides, blackmail is not acceptable, even when rent is not paid. It is not acceptable even when a crime is committed. What is worse, saying you will turn in someone for a murder they did not commit if you do not get paid, or saying you will turn in someone for a murder they did commit if you do not get paid?

Nazi Bitch is having a nervous breakdown.

Anyway, this case is more cut and dry than you are implying.

Rent is paid by the month (in most cases). Refunds for a few days early exit are rare.

WTF does murder have to do with paying rent?

See, Rarely Right Walter, there’s that loss of self-control…again.

Stop acting like a child on the playground. Use some self-discipline.

Stop whining and get over the election loss…Rarely Right Walter.

The landlord sold the house. They were forcing the renters to leave a few days early. Renters should not have to pay rent for days they did not get an apartment.

The landlord threatened to report the tenets for a crime. That is called blackmail, whether they are guilty or not of the crime.

Since you are emphatic towards illegals, perhaps they could come and live with you, Rarely Right Walter…rent free.

Read my response in the post you quoted!

If they were committing a crime, there should be no problem.

If you know someone is a murderer, and threaten to report him, if he does not pay you money, at the very least you are guilty of blackmail. You could also be considered guilty of being a coconspirator, but that is a bit more of a stretch.

There is no protection for threatening someone with blackmail.

If someone is guilty of murder and you tell them to pay you to shut up, chances are, they will pay and you'll shut up. Or, they'll just shut you up...

Yes, there is.

Blackmail can occur during a discussion, so there may be a lack of evidence. If there is a lack of physical evidence, such as letters or text messages, this can be a defense and grounds for dismissal.
