The French president, Emmanuel Macron, has warned that Russian aggression “knows no borders”, will not stop at Ukraine and is a direct threat to France and Europe which must prepare in case the US steps away from its side.

“I want to believe the US will stay by our side,” Macron said in a televised address late on Wednesday. “But we have to be ready if that isn’t the case,” he said.

Of course he wants to believe that, it has allowed his nation to splurge on other government programs knowing that the US is always there to protect them when the crap hits the fan. At some point the US should ask them to actually buy the amount of military they agreed to when NATO was formed.

I have no problem with Europe aiding Ukraine. But they rightly worry that Trump and Putin are enemies of Europe.

That wasn't what I said. Europe absolutely should aid Ukraine. I said, at some point we should actually require NATO members to actually spend what they agreed to on military when NATO was formed. Then they'd be relying on the US a bit less for their protection. We are not the world's military branch.

Now, do I think NATO is important? Yeah, I do. I just also think that NATO should be funded as they agreed from the get go.

France is at 2.1% of GDP, and is raising up to 3% as we speak. Macron is busy spending on the military. The French were saying earlier than anyone else in Europe that they could not depend on the USA. That is why they have their own, independent, nuclear weapons.

The French military plan:

(1) Retreat

(2) Surrender

(3) Collaborate.

NATO long ago became a force for EVIL that must die if the world is to be safe.

Good,...To Macron I say put your money and the youth of your country where your mouth is. Let us know when those French troops of yours hit the front lines in Ukraine. You got this.....

There is nothing wrong with depending on yourself for your nation's defense. If he was saying this "before" he was saying it while your braindead hero was "in charge" of throwing money into Ukraine. Now, before Trump demanded they spend at the levels they agreed to, France was not spending their agreed upon amounts. There is nothing wrong with asking your allies to do what they promised to do. Decades we wound up acting as the military arm of NATO and let European nations off the hook monetarily. I do not think it is a terrible thing that many are spending at the levels they are supposed to spend.

I can still remember MAGA morons howling in protest if I said that Trump would betray NATO and Ukraine.

I think you are misunderstanding French military policy. They have made it a point never to agree to any spending goals with Americans. And if you include their nuclear spending, like Britain does, they blow through any spending goals that trump asked for.

Those who don’t know their history are condemned to repeat it?

So are we just naively supposed to throw away the lessons we learned about the nativist and isolationist policies of WWII? Have you forgotten about Pearl Harbor?

This is not only weak and stupid and not in Americas best interest.

What America invests in the NATO alliance and in foreign aid doesn’t amount to a days worth of Domestic Military spending. Yet it has paid spectacular dividends in that there has been no massive major multinational wars since the end of WWII.

The fact is Trumps issue is not that NATO isn’t paying its fair share it’s that NATO isn’t kissing his ass as Supreme Commander. This isn’t like business negotiation. So are you that naively thinking that we can just abandon the Pax American and all is going hunky dory? History says otherwise. It has been a time tested and proven fact that isolationist and nativist policies have and are utter failures.

The sane applies to Trump and his Tarrifs. It’s a border line insane idea. Have you forgotten the devastating affect the Smoot-Haley Tariff act had on our national economy during the 1930’s?

Tariffs are a surgical tool to prevent other nations from exporting goods and materials below cost to undermine important strategic American industries.

As a blunt tool to force economic concessions from foreign trading partners they are disastrous for our economy and it won’t be the plutocrats who pay the consequences. It will be the American public who will pay with higher consumer prices and unemployment.

The irony here is that it’s Trumps own supporters who will get hurt the most.

tariffs are not isolationism.

peace is not nativist.

you're dumber than a shit monkey.

:truestory:

entangling alliances are to be avoided.

tariffs are good for precision and for blunt force instruments.

that's why they're so verstile and awesome.
