Reynolds signs law ending trans civil rights protections; Iowa 1st state to repeal rights

Yes, 9mm is a widely used standard, not because it somehow "works better" but because the 9mm round is "just right."
Exactly, it is the best mix of attributes. The .45 is the best mix of attributes to kill a horse. So if we had to defend ourselves from horses, then .45 would be the thing to use.

It can stop an adversary without the bullet going through him and then going through the wall behind him and then going through the wall behind that and killing the unseen child or other person that happens to be on the other side. If you are looking for a good self-defense weapon in an urban setting with many walls and windows and rooms, the 9mm is a great choice, hence a widely used standard.
Are you thinking of the .380 APC? It is basically an underpowered 9mm, and has the attributes you are talking about. Even a .45 is more likely not to go all the way through. A 9mm was designed to have a flat trajectory for 25 meters, not to be stopped by walls.

One of the problems with the 9mm is it is deadly at 100 meters, a football field. It can easily kill someone a block or two away.

Nope. The .45 was designed to provide the additional, needed stopping power its predecessor lacked. It was developed for wartime applications.
Both the 9mm Parabellum, and the .45 were designed for war. Para bellum literally is the Latin for prepare for war. The 9mm was designed to be an easy shot at 25 meters(27 yards). The .45 was designed for calvary, basically to kill horses in war.

Have you considered a shotgun?
Shotguns are bulky.

The next time you are thinking about it, look up some Glock, Sig Sauer and Baretta/Taurus semiautomatic 9mm pistols. Your mention of 9mm as a standard for what you are describing was spot on.
The Glock 26 is a good slim 9mm Glock, that still accepts double stacked mags. It might not be the fanciest gun, but it does everything reasonably well.

Racking a 12 gauge shotgun or any gauge gunshot will certainly get the attention of any bad guy.
Walking around with a 12 gauge shotgun will get everyone's attention, and make sure that you are the first one they kill.

For Rarely Right Walter, a slingshot would be good, he can't hurt himself with a slingshot...much.
When I was a kid a couple of friends and I made a zip gun, which included parts from a slingshot. We also made a firing device to fire it without having to hold it. We shot 7 bullets from it, when my friends decided to start shooting it by hand after the next bullet. The next bullet blew apart the gun. Luckily they waited to the next bullet.

It was a fun bit of childish engineering, but also darn dangerous.

Nope. The best round to use against a horse is either a .300 Magnum or a .30-06. The .45 was not designed for large game and would not be nearly as effective against a horse.

Are you thinking of the .380 APC?
Nope. The 9mm is the standard it is for the reasons I mentioned. As you put it, it is the right mix.

The Baretta 9mm was the US military standard sidearm issue until a few years ago.

Chicaco, New York, LA and many other police departments utilize 9mm as standard.

Shotguns are bulky.
... but they meet your requirements.

Walking around with a 12 gauge shotgun will get everyone's attention, and make sure that you are the first one they kill.
... or it will get everyone's immediate attention and immediately dissuade any illegal use of firearms by anyone else, thus preventing anyone from being "the first one killed."

Stop making shit up.

Golly gee, Walter, the shotgun is for protection in the home, not in the streets...a .410 is best for small people, like you, and women.

A young teenager in my pueblo was working at his dad's gun shop showing a hand gun and it discharged, killing him. Terrible.
