Why should the Dept. of Education be retained?

We've all heard that the Trump administration might get rid of the Department of Education in its entirety. There are arguments, mostly from the Left and teachers' unions, to keep it open and funded.

A lot of the discussion has been over why it should be disestablished. I'd like to know what the arguments for keeping it funded and running are, and how those are justified.

Education is a national resource and should have a central point of coordination for quality.

Additionally, as Reagan once stated, our nation's youth are our nation's greatest resource. Maximizing the education of all them is the best way to provide a wealth of educated workers and military personnel.

As it exists now there's no argument to keep it funded and running... And if Randy Weingarten wants it to stay open that's the best reason ever for it to be retired...

Except, since the DoEd was formed, the quality of education in the US has steadily declined. So, it fails on that issue completely.

That's not a reason, it's an irrelevant appeal to emotion, e. g., "It's for the children!" That's followed by a non sequitur.

Are you blaming that solely on the DOE? What about the fact that Republicans have consistently undermined education in the US for 30 years? Or that 92% of educational funding is local? IOWs, poor states have poorer schools? Guess which states those are, Terry?

Although the data in this is 15 years old, I strongly doubt it's changed much except for getting worse.

I can't come up with any.

I wouldn't be surprised if DOGE finds that a hefty chunk of this money isn't going towards any domestically located education of any sort.

To take one state that demolishes your entire argument, and there are plenty of others, it's Arizona. Your map shows Arizona ranked 19th in quality of high schools. Yet, Arizona consistently ranks 48th, or 49th in education funding. There is no correlation between spending on education and outcomes.

Many of the shittiest school districts with the worst outcomes are in deep blue states.

States can vary between rich and poor areas. If you want to use Arizona as an example, break it down by county, tax rates and average income.

The bottom line is that schools, teachers, books and transportation cost money. Cities can use organic public transportation systems, but rural areas are stuck with buses and bus driver salaries. Less money means less services. It's not rocket science.
