Some of them are just pictures of contrails, the condensed water from engine exhaust or from wingtip or control vortices.

Plays no role in the formation of contrails or vorticies. Contrails (which are liquid water or ice) come from the engine exhaust, a hell of a lot hotter than the skin of the aircraft! As the hot exhaust hits the cold air, the water vapor in the engine exhaust condenses out and becomes visible.

You can even see the effect in automotive exhaust on an extremely cold day.

Wingtip and control surface vorticies form best when the aircraft is slow in humid areas, such as during landing. They are quite common in Seattle on approaching aircraft to SeaTac (KSEA) when it's humid here. I've even had them form from my little Cessna 150 making an approach in very humid weather.
