MOSCOW, January 24. /TASS/. Moscow will seek guarantees to ensure that Ukraine will never be admitted to NATO, as Ukraine’s accession would make it impossible to achieve peace, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said.

"For us, this is a key element of potential agreements on the conflict in Ukraine and an element of removing the root causes of this conflict. And we will be seeking not only rock-steady legal guarantees, ruling out any Ukrainian membership in NATO, but we will also demand that the alliance itself embrace this policy," the senior Russian diplomat explained.

According to Grushko, Ukraine joining NATO "would rule out achieving peace in Ukraine and, more broadly, establishing any security architecture," a vision that he said is shared by "quite a number of members of the alliance."

"The truth is, there exist different opinions regarding the prospects for admitting Ukraine to NATO inside the alliance," he explained.

Commenting on a statement from Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who called for postponing Kiev's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance for the sake of peace talks earlier this week, Grushko said: "Mr. Fico is absolutely right here as he assessed these plans."

Had Putin taken Ukraine in two weeks, like most of us thought he would, he would dictate the terms.

Without victory, Putin needs to convince the Ukrainians there is something in it for them. And the "peace of the grave" is not a reasonable offer. Putin needs to convince the Ukrainians there is a real guaranteed peace, not a temporary peace bought by disarming, while the Putin rebuilds and then attacks. One possible guarantee of the peace would be NATO membership.

Complete disarming would not be a guarantee of peace.

So Putin has given up on his original definition of victory, which was explicitly to remove the 'Nazi' government in Kyiv from power, and demilitarize the nation of Ukraine.

A fighting retreat is always better than the "peace of the grave." If you cannot replace your losses, you do a fighting retreat. If you are cornered, and the only alternative is the "peace of the grave", you die fighting.

But Ukraine is not there yet. They are not even conscripting people under age 25. There is still replacements for the losses... Just not a lot of replacements for the losses.

That depends upon how you define success. You, for example , believed that Ukraine had defeated the Russians when the Zelenskies went on a suicide mission into Kursk.
