Health Premium Rates to Rise for Poorest Age Group

The poorest age group, those between the age of 20 to 30 are now forced to not only buy largely useless and rarely to be used healthcare insurance, they will also have to pay MORE than they did.

What a shame, that money could go to paying off their student loan faster like I did or saving for a first home. The American dream slips a little further out of young people's hands...

"CHICAGO (AP) - Health insurance premiums for young adults are expected to rise about 17 percent once they're required to buy insurance four years from now. That estimate is from an analysis by Rand Health.

Young people will need to carry more of the burden of health care under the new health overhaul law. The new law limits an industry practice of charging older customers more"

The good news is this doesn't take effect for 4 years and hopefully should be repealed by then.

This is just one of the many reasons to repeal this monstrosity.

The chickens will definitely come home to roost. Don't hold your breath expecting the people here who vociferously wanted this to pass to share the woes of their children when they become responsible paying adults and are forced to pay for a service they rarely use versus something they need to do as mentioned above, like pay off your student loan.

Just about the time when you get real comfortable thinking you've just raised the last one and they're out on their own, they'll be coming back with their hand out asking for money to pay the light bill.

color me shocked. didn't see this coming at all. [/sarcasm]

Wonder if Obama can tell us what's in the bill now? Think maybe he knows more than when he was pushing it last week?

It didn't matter a hoot about any of that. The only objective was to check off a win in the left column.

Health insurance premiums for young adults are expected to rise about 17 percent ?

Really?????

I can only pray that if there is a god they pay AT LEAST 17% more....if there is any justice, they'll pay 47% more, they got this radical asshole socialist elected...

well. this and now the social security taxes are going to have to go up, since they now paid out more than they are expected to take in this year.

Not to worry. Soon the healthcare system will be fraternal twins hatched in different eras, but with the same stinking outcome.

Nothing like shooting more holes in an already sinking ship.

I said 20 somethings weren't even getting a reach aroung a year ago. That said I'm buying insurance stocks.

Hold on folks. First of all "kids" can stay on their parents plan until 26 years of age. If they don't have a good education and job by then they may as well give up!

Second, 17% increase on what? They probably pay the lowest rates anyway. I'm sure a guy at 50 pays a lot more than a "kid" at 26.

Perhaps, to even things out, government auto insurance would be a good thing. Usually young drivers pay high premiums while older drivers pay less.

Moral: More government programs. :D

So a medical writer bangs out a seven-sentence scare piece, in which three show the upside -- "Even so, the pluses could outweigh the minuses. Some 2 million people under age 26 should qualify for coverage under their parents' health plans. And Medicaid expansion will insure 9 million more young adults." -- and RWs go nuclear.

Get a grip, people. :palm:

Medicaid is already billions in the red. Why is that?

whoa whoa whoa, didn't you advocate that we should everything in our power to help those who cannot?

Absolutely. My point is if at 26 years of age a "kid" doesn't have a decent education and job asking them to contribute to the health plan is not going to disrupt their life. If they are poor the government will subsidize them.

The point is they are not required to contribute to the health plan when trying to pay for their education or just starting out in life. At 26 they are fully adults.

You've posted some dumb ass posts in the past Dano but this one probably takes them all. In the first place Rand Health is a pro insurance interest group that opposes HC reform so their credibility is questionable and second no shit young people will be expected to carry more of the burden of health care. That's because the irresponsible "I'm gonna live forever" youngsters practically carry none of the burden as most carry insurance under their parents or none at all.

I wouldn't hold on to it to long. Either a public option will around the corner or their will be legislation requiring them to operate as non-profits.

The only thing I hold a long time is oil and the S&P 500. That said the pe on the industry was double a few years back. I've already been in and out of the insurers twice and will prob do it twice before I tire of it around fall. I'll be watching thier earnings and will stay in if they ramp up nicely.
