California, on occasion, is now producing too much solar energy. The True Believers would have you believe that's a good thing. But the reality is it's not. What happens is that electricity has to go somewhere and what California has to do to get rid of it is bribe other states to take it off their hands. So, Californians get higher electric bills--not just because of the cost of the solar arrays and duplication of generation--because the state is paying other states to take electricity off their hands.
Germany has been in this position for a couple of decades now. Their neighbors won't always take the power either and German attempts to dump on them has resulted in their disconnecting their grids from Germany.

Arizona, where I live, is the big winner in that getting something like $100 million in free electricity paid for by California. Thanks California!

Solar power glut boosts California electric bills. Other states reap the benefits
California is now producing so much solar energy that the state must increasingly ask solar farms to stop producing to prevent overloading the electric grid. In the last 12 months, power that would have fueled 518,000 California homes for a year has been curtailed or thrown away.
