The Lost Wages of Youth

There’s plenty of competition, but our vote for the recent act of Congress that has caused the most economic hardship goes to the May 2007 law raising the minimum wage in three stages to $7.25 an hour from $5.15. Rarely has a law hurt more vulnerable people more quickly.

A higher minimum wage has the biggest impact on those with the least experience or the fewest skills. That means in particular those looking for entry-level jobs, especially teenagers. And sure enough, as nearly all economic models predict, the higher minimum has wreaked havoc with teenage job seekers, well beyond what you would expect even in a recession…

…But as the minimum wage increased even as the overall job market began to worsen, the damage to teen job seekers became more severe. By the time the third increase to $7.25 from $6.55 took effect in July 2009, the teen jobless rate was 24.3%, and by October it peaked at 27.6% before dropping to 26.4% in January.

The story is even worse for black teens, who often have lower than average education levels or live in areas with fewer job prospects. Their jobless rate climbed from 38.5% before the third wage hike to 49.8% in November 2009, before falling back to 43.8% in January. For black male teens, the rate climbed to 52.2% in December from 39.2% in July. The difference between the jobless rates for black teens and the entire population widened by six percentage points from June 2007 to January 2010. Even assuming those rates fall as the job market improves this year, they will remain destructively high.

No surprise here, we all knew this would happen. The liberals wants them unemployed, it makes it so much easier to control them and keep them relying on the government.

Yes, it affects teenagers but they live at home. Food, shelter, video games....Let's compare that to a family trying to put food on the table.

As for the Liberals wanting people unemployed do you suggest the alternative is working for slave wages? I suppose if we take your argument to the logical conclusion we could say if wages were $2.00/hr we could get everyone off welfare.

I believe that this was brought up, before the increase occured and the Liberal Left said that it wouldn't have an affect.

YEAH; go tell it to that 15 year old kid who's trying to help, by getting a job and giving his money to his family.

Fuck him, if he can't get a job that pays more then you think he should have.

You're such a humanitarian.

Right-wingers are so dumb. It's like they can't look at the issue of minimum wages beyond doing a partial equilibrium Walrasian analysis. The minimum wage probably leads to no increase in unemployment at all. It all goes into higher prices. Not much higher prices, since MW workers are still going to be making a small fraction of the total salary at any large company.

Oh, please. As if that's the majority of minimum wage earners. Besides, the need for a 15 year old to help support the family is most likely due to their parents earning the subsistent, minimum wage.

There are lots of temporary jobs for young people where the minimum wage does not enter into it. A set price to cut the neighbor's lawns or paint a fence or do gardening or wash and paint elderly people's homes.

There are people in my neighborhood, including myself, who would be happy to find a teen to help out. The problem is many parents give their teens money so why should they work for it?

I ran ads last year looking for someone to help. Yard work. Fence painting. There was no line up at the door and I was offering above minimum wage. The ability of a 15 year old to help support a family does not justify having hundreds of others living in poverty due to working at minimum wage.

And here you have it.
Everything that appled basis his ideas on, is centered around the small world he lives in and the people he knows.
Everything that is outside of that small sphere, aren't considered to be important to him.

Apple says he's a Liberal, when in truth he's an elitist.

It sounds like you're the elitist if you know more 15 year olds seeking a job than people trying to eke out a living on minimum wage.

Ah, let's cut the crap. You don't care anymore about the 15 year old than you do about anyone else. It's the 15 cents added to the price of a coffee or the 10 cents on a donut, money that could more than cover any minimum wage increase, that bothers you.

This is a minimum wage, not a maximum wage. Are you confused?

Says the guy who brings up chimerism to say that DNA doesn't show that an embryo is human life. As if a chimera is even close to the "majority" of embryos...

Nice spin but that's exactly what anti-abortionists do; spin.

The purpose and context of my remark was in reply to "unique" DNA being the defining characteristic of a human life, as in human being. That is incorrect. It's the perfect example of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing. It's a sin considering we have the internet and search engines and after instructing someone of an error they continue to perpetuate it.

One is not required to have "unique" DNA. Furthermore, DNA is the defining characteristic of human material; not human life or a human being.

LOL. It's exactly what you just said, it isn't my "spin" it's yours. According to you, in this particular conversation "majority" is all that counts, in the other the rarest of occurrences defines it all, and without consideration of the actual life that must exist in order for the event (chimerism) to occur. You absolutely haven't the credibility to even suggest that another needs a "majority" event for it to count, nor the capacity to think within parameters of logic. Your fallacies abound and your hypocrisy deepens with each demand like that.

By all means participate in the conversation, just don't ever attempt to teach another about fallacies, so far they are all you have ever offered.

Anyway, the point in this thread for you is that you have no basis on which to assert any other person posts a fallacy, as determined by your incredible inaccuracy in being able to actually discern what another has actually stated from your fantasy argument.

UH-I dont drink coffee and I don't buy donuts; but once again you attempt to divert attention from your unfeeling behavior, by trying to blame others.
And then you show how your behavior is that of an elitist.

Isn't it strange that in a thread titled "The Lost Wages of Youth" you write,

My point for this thread is clearly evidenced in your answers. You have no room to ever give advice to another poster to avoid fallacy.

It was a direct example of you doing exactly what you attempted to accuse another of doing in this thread.

As for the rest, I'm moving those back to the idiotic abortion thread where you will again bring up other natural causes of death and attempt to pretend that means something isn't alive before it died.

I countered every incorrect statement you made and statements made by others with which you agreed. I suggest if you don't want to argue the contents of my reply don't be cowardly by bringing up the topic on an inappropriate thread (this thread) and then moving my reply elsewhere.

It's pathetic to see your ego is of such proportion you'd stoop to such a tactic while still commenting on my "moved" post.

You've lost complete credibility assuming you had any to begin with.
