Peltz, a renowned activist investor currently in a battle over Disney, then told the Financial Times that he would “probably” vote for the GOP front-runner in 2024. The New York Times first reported that Trump dined with Musk and other donors but did not name Peltz, Wynn or Perlmutter.

Republicans controlled the House for six of the eight Obama. The reality is both parties are the reason we have $34 trillion in debt. And we have that because voters don't actually care about spending. If we did we would hold those in office accountable. But we don't because the minute a politician suggests reducing spending we want to vote them out of office. So while politicians may play dumb, they are smart enough to know they get elected/re-elected by giving things to people - not taking them away. And until voters demand change, spending will only stay on this upward trajectory until we can no longer afford to do so.

Well, no, Nordy…the bill would have allowed 5000 illegals a day to enter.

The goal is to stop illegal immigration, at least it is the Republican goal.

The Democratic goal is to have the Texas razor wire cut and to fight every effort by border governors to stop illegals from entering.

Look at the Trump years where he kept saying we have the best economy ever yet we were running trillion dollar deficits. When you run on a platform of tax cuts, increased military spending and not touching entitlements even a UCLA grad can see where that is headed.

Republicans used to be a party of fiscal responsibility. It’s also why they could never get elected (at least in the House). Post Reagan we gave lip service to fiscal responsibility but rarely in action (unless it was a Democratic President).

Simply electing Republicans is not going to reduce spending. It’s just going to direct the spending in ways that Republicans like/prefer.

I agreed with everything until you said that. I consider myself MAGA and I would like to see spending decreases. I'd start by requiring every branch of government to reduce spending by a modest 5%

The goal, at least the Republican goal, is to reduce illegal immigration to zero…it is the law.

Check the polls on border issues. The American people are not with you on open borders.

By far the biggest spending done by the federal govt is on entitlements, for which Trump has attacked any Republican who at any point has talked about reforming them. The next biggest is the military, which Trump wants to increase spending on.

I have no issues with cutting spending within other agencies but the net effect is just above negligible if leaving the big spending areas untouched.

In 2016 I actually had hope that Trump, not being a traditional politician, might actually do something others wouldn’t or couldn’t. But he tuned out just like everyone else. I watched/listened closely during Trump’s four years in office to the America First folks and Freedom Caucus types and they all went silent on spending. Only when Biden took office did they start speaking up again.

This is just our reality unfortunately and only when it becomes a crisis that we can no longer avoid will people pay attention, care.
