Has something happened to prompt you to ask this question? I thought that this had been settled legally, at least with respect to public schools.
Me too Thorn. The answer from me is "no." I don't like mandated anything.

Me neither. I don't see a problem with kids praying individually so long as it isn't disruptive, or doesn't take place when they're supposed to be paying attention in class. But making it a requirement renders it meaningless, even to most believers.
Cool, nuthing prompted the question other than I learned that in the 1980's Reagan was promoting a School Prayer Amendment to the Constitution. I was thinking that even the Social Conservatives have come a long way and was testing that theory.

That is the current state of the law, as long as it is not led or promoted by a school employee.

What did this Amendment propose?

Ill have to look for the wording, but the effect was to allow for school personal to lead the pupals in a "volentary" prayer, wording and religen to be chosen by the school.
The key word in that would be "voentary." Your opening post is misleading using the word "mandated." I still am not for it as I don't like public prayer except in my home or at church.
I was not saying that what Regan proposed would be mandated. What I dont like about what Regan proposed is that it can be led by and promoted by the school.

Why can't people lead and promote voluntary prayer?
Individual people can, the government, including people paid by the government to care for and educate those kids should be prohibited based upon the 1st Amendment.

School employees have protection of rights in the Constitution, don't they? Why could they not lead and promote VOLUNTARY prayer? In a school, in a courthouse, in a fire department, in a stadium, in a street?

I dont know why I am even discussing anything with you... but... it is clear that a person acting as an agent of the government cannot promote the establishment of religen...
An employee of a school cannot promote prayer....
Much like if Wall Mart hires you, you give up some of your freedom of speech while at work, because they do not allow you to scream for no reason in the store! The WallMart employee gives up his freedom to cary arms as they do not allow that in the store.
You are not so dumb as to not be able to understand this!
