feb 4 2024 I first reported in April 2023 about a new California state law that would require utility companies to come up with a fixed-rate plan as a way to help stabilize rates and make billing more "equitable."

Hence, the state’s soon-to-be-implemented "equitable" policy will base residential electricity bills on income rather than usage, even as public and political opposition to the idea builds in the Democratic coalition.

As Newsom continues to feel the heat as he awaits a final proposal from the state's utility commission that's consistent with the 2022 law that required the agency to devise an income-based billing system, a spokesman said on Tuesday that the governor is looking forward to it.

Electricity rates have risen nearly 70 percent since 2010, when the state started to break from fossil fuels, and California households pay nearly 83 percent more than the average for homes elsewhere in the United States.

In a representative democracy, government has accountability on election day.

In the state just above me,
which is far from my idea of paradise
but which seems to be doing OK,
all hard liquor is sold in state operated package stores.

It's less expensive than buying it here in Massachusetts,
the variety is far greater than in smaller, privately owned package stores,
and Massachusetts citizens living near the border
all buy their spirits there.

None of the conservative "Live Free or Die" people up there
EVER complain about alcohol "communism."

I was at INEL (Idaho National Engineering Labs) back in the 80's. Idaho had no liquor sales outside state run stores. These had 'banker's hours' meaning for most working people you could rarely get to one when it was open. The amount you could purchase at one time was regulated and limited, and selection was likewise limited.

In Texas there are (decreasingly) blue (aka dry) counties, even today. No alcohol sales whatsoever.

If you let government run these sales they get to decide as a bureaucracy everything with no public input necessarily.

If the government runs your electrical power, same thing. There is no need on their part to be efficient. If there isn't enough to go around, they can simply ration and you get little or no say. Customer service can be the worst sort of DMV nightmare and they won't care. Doing anything might entail doing it in person and you usually have to take all day to get through the process. They can put you on hold for hours if you call. They don't care, there is no competition to them.
