WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department announced Friday that it was seizing more than 500,000 barrels of internationally sanctioned Iranian fuel that officials said was illegally trafficked to provide funding for the country’s paramilitary force.

In addition, prosecutors announced criminal charges related to the sale of the crude oil to buyers in China, Russia and Syria.

Officials described the actions, which come at time of simmering tensions between the U.S. and Iran, as part of a broader effort to disrupt funding to the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard’s Quds Force, an expeditionary unit believed to be working abroad in countries like Iraq, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen to back Iranian-allied militias

I mean, we would win if we went to war with Iran. It would just be inhumane. Most Iranians disagree with their fucked-up leadership. It would be unfair to the Iranian people to attack their homeland. Plus we'd be seen as bullies if we did.

I say, keep fucking with their defenses. Take out their warships at sea. This is the appropriate measured response.

Like Iraq, it'd turn into a "win the war, lose the peace" situation. Iran has a strong moderate, pro-Western population in their cities. The Iranian theocracy can't stop progress. The same cyber weapons they and their allies are using on the West backfire when Iranians learn about the outside world. Iran is in deep need of a Persian Spring. Like the US antiwar protests in the '60s, Iran has seen, and roughly quelled, protests against brutal authority. I doubt they'll be able to keep the lid on it long enough for the Iranian theocrats to build their Caliphate.

Better, IMHO, to encourage those elements of democracy and freedom inside Iran and avoid doing something stupid that unites them all.
