CHART OF THE DAY: Gas pump prices turn negative for 2023 after 18% plunge

Prices for gas at the pump have turned negative on the year after plunging 18% since September.

The average price of a gallon of gas in the US fell to $3.20 this week, compared to $3.90 a few months ago.
The sharp decline in gasoline prices comes at a seasonal low period following the busy summer travel season.
Our Chart of the Day is from Bespoke, which shows a sharp decline in the average price of a gallon of gas since September.
According to AAA, gasoline prices have declined by 18% to $3.20 per gallon this week, compared to a 2023 high of $3.90 per gallon just a few months ago.
The sharp decline represents a new 2023 low for the average price of a gallon of gas, and is below the 2022 closing price of about $3.21.
The decline comes a few months after the busy summer travel season, in which demand for gasoline typically surges as more people hit the road for vacation.
The drop in gasoline prices has coincided with a drop in the price of crude oil, which fell from $95 a barrel in September to about $70 today, representing a decline of 26%. Oil prices are seeing their longest streak of declines in five years.*
According to Bespoke, the sharp drop in gas prices should put downside pressure on inflation.
"In our view, we're likely to see a negative month-over-month print in November headline CPI, mostly due to the steep drop in gas prices," Bespoke said in a note to clients on Thursday.

ONE OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST FLOATING SOLAR PANEL FARMS SPANS OVER 45 FOOTBALL FIELDS — AND COULD BE THE KEY TO ENERGY PRODUCTION

The air pollution saved by the system is equivalent to removing 7,000 cars from the road a year.
by Rick Kazmer*/*January 30, 2024

A giant solar panel flotilla in Singapore is proving its viability two years into operations.*
The benchmarks reported by developer Sembcorp so far include producing enough power for 16,000 four-room flats and avoiding more than 35,000 tons of air pollution a year.*
It is Singapore’s first system of this size, boasting 122,000 floating solar panels on more than 111 acres, per Sembcorp.*
That’s about the size of 45 football fields, according to a 2021 Reuters report that documented the system’s debut. It was billed then as being able to power Singapore’s five water treatment plants. Now, Sembcorp reports that Singapore has a 100% “green waterworks system,” thanks to the flotilla.*

Norway claims electric vehicles are superior in cold weather

Norway has been experiencing some exceptionally low temperatures since the start of 2024, giving consumers some small insight into the capabilities of EVs over those with internal combustion engines. The first nine days of the new year were a busy time for the Norwegian roadside assistance company Viking, similar to America's AAA, as they responded to 34,000 roadside calls throughout the country. Of all the vehicles they serviced,*only 13% were EVs. Since then, EVs have made up about 21% of the service calls the company receives, mostly due to starting issues in the cold.

So Norwegians know not to drive their EVs in cold weather.

When Biden took office the national average for the price of gasoline was $2.39 Biden poops his Depends.
Yup. Gas prices around my parts STILL haven't reached the average Trump-era prices... Lately they've been hanging around approximately the very peak high price during the Trump-era. Still nowhere near $2/gal or less.

Trump or bust 2024.

Biden needs to be the first POTUS in history who figures out how to make the cost of goods DOWN, instead of steadily rising almost each and every year.

Gas prices are still over 50% higher than they were before Joke took office...

Yes Terry. I know :: shock :: right.

Cost of goods do not go down over time and do go up in very similar ways to look at stock index always moving up.

'Why can't the POTUS who takes over in 2024 GE reverse gas prices down to cheaper than gas was when i first started driving. Waaaaa. Waaaaaa'

Biden made prices shoot up massively with high inflation brought on by massive deficit spending--that did nothing--early on in his administration. With gasoline, and fuels, he waged a war on fossil fuels that blew up in his face. He's had to back down from that greentard bullshit bigtime, even getting repeatedly smacked down in the courts for his actions. Now, gasoline has sort of stabilized at around 3.25 to 3.50 a gallon and is likely to stay there due to that inflation (about 25%).

Biden, and Biden alone, is responsible for that total fuck up.

Biden is not a POTUS. He is an installed Chief Puppet.

President Trump did just fine regarding the cost of goods. Lower energy prices.... lower cost of goods....

Cost of goods do not go down over time
... maybe under Biden Regime economic policy they can't....... ;)

Nobody said that, moron. Stop being ridiculous.

People just want gas prices to return back down to the Trump-era prices. IOW, put Trump back in office.

All presidents have done a bad job of managing energy. When I was a kid, gas was 16.9 a gallon. Since it has gotten higher and higher over time all presidents have failed. That is not the problem.
In fact, we allowed gas companies to consolidate through mergers and buyouts until there is no competition. They are a huge monolith sucking the wealth of the people into the pockets of the super wealthy. They fight environmental protections because the equipment costs money. The old "all the traffic will bear" is their mantra. They have enormous power and use it against the interests of the people. That attitude is the same one Trump has.

NO Terry.

YOu need to be less stupid.

Inflation was WORLD WIDE, as a result of Covid and there is NO denying that.

Biden happened to MANAGE inflation better than all the other countries on this planet. It was a MASSIVE success as measured by the peers performance.

BIden is pumping far more oil than Trump ever would or could.

Your entire position is nothing but Magat lies and revisionist history.

What Biden IS responsible for is:

- steering the US through a world wide recession better than any other country
- Managing inflation better than any other country
- increasing oil production more than Trump ever could
- creating record jobs that make Trumps prior bragging about jobs laughably small
- Completing the infrastructure projects Trump dreamed about but could not do
