I've seen them but never owned or fired one, but they are very popular.

My dad passed away three weeks ago. He has an M-1. It’s a super fun gun to shoot. I bought it for him when he retired from the Post Office in the early 90’s. He hunted with it for 30 minutes that year and killed a nice buck with it. The last time we went shooting (about 6 months ago) he had to take it and fire I off a few mags worth. He was pretty deadly with it.

Sorry about your dad. I lost mine a few years ago. Good memories are good to have.

A record high number of American voters say they or someone in their household owns a gun, according to a new survey.

An NBC News national poll finds that a majority — 52% — of respondents say that they or someone in their home owns a firearm. It is the highest number since NBC started asking in 1999.

Just four years ago, 46% of Americans said they or someone in their household owned a gun in a 2019 NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. And a decade ago, in 2013, that number was 42%.

"In the last 10 years, we've grown [10 points] in gun ownership. That's a very stunning number," Micah Roberts of Republican firm Public Opinion Strategies, who conducted the poll with Democratic pollster Hart Research, told NBC News.

You know, it’s odd how perspective works. Growing up there were always guns in our house. My dad had them, my brothers had them, and when I was old enough (5th grade) I had them. Households of friends had them. So it was odd when I encountered households that didn’t own guns.

That said, I say the Glock 19 on the list. I won a Glock 41 Gen 4 Longslide in 45 ACP. I’ve shot it some but was finally able to shoot it off of a bench while visiting the in-laws here in Kentucky. Impressive grouping for a mid-range priced gun. I have decided to keep it. The trigger pull is a bit long but necessary for a gun with no safety. I’m looking forward to shooting the gun more and getting more used to it. If I’m ever home during modern gun season I think I will try to take a deer with it.

Same here with guns. When I was 17, my friend and I'd go walking down the street with our Ithaca 37s to go dove hunting in the Colorado prairie behind the residential housing. Anyone doing that these days would have SWAT called down upon them.

I love the .45 ACP and have both a couple of 1911s plus a few other handguns and a carbine in that caliber.

The M-1 Garand and Carbine are the rifles that won WW2. I think the Japanese and Germans were still using bolt action infantry rifles until way late in the war.
Agreed the Americans had an advantage with semi-automatic rifles which were also more easily reloaded.

The Japanese were. The Germans produced and issued the G 41 rifle in pretty big numbers--about 100,000. This was a semi-automatic rifle comparable to the Garand. The Soviets had the SVT 38/40 producing about 1.6 million, again roughly comparable to the Garand ending production in 1942 in favor of continuing to produce the Mosin Nagant bolt action rifle that was simpler to manufacture.

The G 41 was a quality product and an equal to the Garand in that respect. The SVT on the other hand was pretty shoddy with a number of issues and also had poor accuracy.

I know the Germans and Soviets eventually produced semi automatic infantry rifles.

I just don't think they were available as early, or in the quantities that the M-1 was available as standard issue to American soldiers and Marines.

According to Wikipedia, the bolt action K98k was the standard rifle issued in the Wermacht up to 1945, while only 402 thousand semi automatic Gewehr 43 were produced by Nazi Germany.

Did you know some Mosin Nagant rifles were produced in the US
