Propaganda is also more likely to prevalent when a side in a war is losing than winning. The winner doesn't need to use it.

No way of knowing for sure. We know they were taken hostage. We know they were civilians. For all we know, they could have been selected to be treated well, then released to spread a message that all the hostages are being so treated when most are being mistreated. We have no real way of knowing one way or the other for sure.

Well, unless you are a total dupe, we both know CNN is known both for lying / making up stories, and for sensationalizing tabloid style all sorts of things.
