Chlorine dioxide, a powerful bleach is also used in public drinking water to disinfect it.

Your body uses chlorine to make hydrochloric acid in your stomach. And we bathe in chlorine, we drink it in our water, and we swim it.

By all means, make sure water is disinfected before you drink it.
