Evidently there is quite a bit of turmoil in the military due to Netanyahu's taking over of the courts. It seems the citizens are rebelling against mandatory service, and internally the military is a mess.

It's pretty obvious from what happened that had to be the case. The second way they did it was by firing so many rockets at once the system was overwhelmed.

It was both. Hamas attacked a number of Israeli military installations near the border. It isn't hard to damage a missile launcher or take down the associated radars and such for it.
