Chavez Says He’ll Seize Businesses That Raise Prices (Update1)

By Daniel Cancel

Jan. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said that businesses have no reason to raise prices following the devaluation of the bolivar and that the government will seize any entity that boosts its prices.

Chavez said he’ll create an anti-speculation committee to monitor prices after private businesses said that prices would double and consumers rushed to buy household appliances and televisions. The government is the only authority able to dictate price increases, he said.

“The bourgeois are already talking about how all prices are going to double and they’re closing their businesses to raise prices,” Chavez said in comments on state television during his weekly “Alo Presidente” program. “People, don’t let them rob you, denounce it, and I’m capable of taking over that business.”

Chavez devalued the bolivar as much as 50 percent on Jan. 8 for the first time in almost 5 years, as last year’s decline in oil revenue caused the economy to contract an estimated 2.9 percent, its first recession since 2003. The government set a multi-tiered currency system that Chavez says will stimulate national production by making imports more expensive.

Update 2...

National Guard to enforce price fixing...

If I owned the business I would simply close, you cannot devalue the currency by 50% then expect business owners to sell below cost.

A fan of Atlas Shrugged, huh? The poor downtrodden corporate overlords will simply take their marbles home and leave us to fend for ourselves?

I'm kinda surprised you left out some important elements of your Reuters link. Like Chavez pumping money and capital into businesses to help them weather the storm.

After browbeating firms that might raise prices, he announced $1 billion of credits and subsidies to try to diversify the economy and get industry back on its feet. He also invited businessmen to talks with the government.

....and check this out. Holy Shit! I wish we had an Elected Executive who did this shit when ENRON ripped off the people of California to the tune of billions of dollars. Having National Guard troops show up at the door of Ken Lay to frog march him out of his plush office would have ruled!

CARACAS, Jan 10 (Reuters) - Venezuela's Hugo Chavez ordered soldiers to seek out businesses that raise prices after a sharp devaluation of the bolivar currency last week, saying he will expropriate firms that engage in price gouging.

This is what happens when you want lazy people to have the same lifestyle as non lazy people.

Right, "left it out"... that's why I carefully avoided linking to the stories I was talking about. Oh Wait! The links are there! How did that happen?

And I told you what I would do. I'm not going to prison for not selling below value, I'd simply close and avoid prison.

And 1 Billion in subsidies are not even close to covering the loss of those businesses.

You can cheer it on all you want, but the controlled economy is failing once again in the newest version...

I don't think most people with jobs have time to read entire links to articles, but I had a strange suspicion that your summary might not be telling the whole story. So I read it. Honestly, the summary you posted in the OP made it sound like Chavez was devaluing the bolivar, and shutting down businesses who dared raise their prices. Period, that was your entire summation. Honestly, did you really even read the whole article that said there was a stimulus bailout to venezuelan industry to keep them afloat?

Look, I realize most republicans are genetically predisposed to defending the interests of privilege and wealth. But do you know how many people in this country would be totally STOKED if Obama or Bush had given billions in bailouts and stimulus, with the caveat that if they fucked over consumers while being being beneficiaries consumer tax dollars, they would send in the national guard and kick the living shit out of them?

I'm betting most people in this country would be totally psyched to see those kind of threats and constraints placed on the use of our bail-out tax dollars to corporate overlords and business people.

Only the magic strawman maker could assume that every business owner would be of "privilege and wealth".

Seriously, your defense of this because he's going to spend minimal subsidies is weak. If I were a business owner there I would close to avoid prison and so will many others. He says they are closing to "raise prices", they aren't.

Yes. Lazy people like CEO's who do nothing should get rewarded immensely, while hard working factory workers who are responsible for all the wealth in the industry should get nothing. Thanks for playing.

this is so idiotic it is beyond the realm of human decency

yeah, ceo's do absolutely nothing....amazing how little you know of life

The workers do everything that makes a company worth anything; the CEO's get all the money. That's how it works, just like in feudalism.

good lord, you're a simpleton

ceo's (who are workers too) often put in longer hours than other workers and other executives...its a total lie to claim that only the "workers" do everything...try running a company without an executive department and without a ceo....

you really need to open your eyes watermark and stop swallowing all the socialist propaganda....you don't even know one ceo personally, you've never worked in business, yet you're an expert...have you even taken a business class?

Its more leftist bullshit claiming that there is such a thing as REAL wealth and REAL work production if you build shit with your hands, work the land, paint the fences, etc. as opposed to wearing a suit, sitting behind a desk, and analyzing reports...

maybe its because people like watermark don't know how to use their brain, so they only know - hands move = work

they can't contemplate that people can actually use their intelligence for work

even with the colossal strawman he created, notice how he did not mention the massive bailout the autoworkers union got? Or the massive influx of cash to 'save' the public sector union jobs via the state governments? I can't imagine how he left them out as big as that strawman was.

In addition to everything already mentioned, most CEO's have the most to lose if their business is unsuccessful, not to mention they've already invested years of time and effort into their company. I know for a fact my boss works harder than I do every day, and I put in almost 60 hours a week of skilled manual labor. When you enter the work force you'll find that out 95% of the time (there are some lazy, greedy, selfish execs at the top who don't deserve the position they hold) your boss is your boss for a reason.

i seriously doubt watermark has ever held a full time job
