Russian propaganda film plays to empty theaters

Kremlin’s propaganda film about Ukraine war plays to empty cinemas

The box-office flop, about a fictional violinist who gets caught up in the atrocities, is further evidence that Russians want to forget about the invasion

Alexei wasn’t sure if he had entered the right cinema auditorium as he put down the popcorn and plunged into his chair. The room was dark and quiet, with only three other audience members scattered across the large Moscow theatre that could fit more than 100 people.

It was a Friday evening and Alexei had come to see The Witness, Russia’s first feature-length film about its invasion of Ukraine that premiered across the country on 17 August.

The Witness centres on a fictional character called Daniel Cohen, an esteemed Belgian violinist who arrives in Kyiv to perform in February 2022, days before Russian troops entered Ukraine

As Russia launches its war, Cohen gets caught up in the fighting, witnessing a series of “inhuman crimes and bloody provocations by Ukrainian nationalists”, according to the movie’s premise.

At one point, a Ukrainian commander is seen walking around with a copy of Mein Kampf, while other Ukrainian soldiers pledge their allegiance to Adolf Hitler. As a witness to these unspeakable horrors, Cohen sets out to tell the world the “truth” about the conflict.

In two hours of screen time, the film covers a wide spectrum of falsehoods that the Kremlin has used to justify its invasion of Ukraine. On the eve of the invasion, Vladimir Putin said Moscow had to “denazify” its neighbour, the lie that Ukraine was infiltrated by dangerous “Nazis”.

But The Witness is a box-office flop. Set to a budget of 200 million roubles (£1.5m), it has grossed less than 14 million roubles (£110,000) in its first two weeks, with viewers across the country reporting empty cinema halls.

The Russian people are getting more unified in repelling Western aggression not less thanks to Kievs terrorist acts against civilians.

I doubt that the Russians are the intended audience of a move explaining Russian motivations in dealing with Ukraine/The West....they already know and are onboard. Making money is certainly not the motivation of the movie.

Keep your eye on the ball, dont let Western propaganda derail you.

Interesting that the fictional character was named Cohen

Complaining about propaganda movies is rich given that for years Hollywood has made almost nothing but WOKE propaganda.

Which even if true would be irrelevant, as you almost certainly know.

What matters is Right/Not Right.

I am Right.

Russia's economy is smaller than Spain's.

The West won't be hurt in any measurable way if Putin takes his ball, goes home crying, and refuses to engage the West.

Russia is on a downward trajectory to being a subpar 21st century world economic, cultural, political, and conventional military power.

Russian authorities wouldn't have had to scour Russian prisons for cannon fodder to send to the front if young Russian men were beating down the doors of military recruitment offices eager to serve in Ukraine.

A lot of Russians may think invading Ukraine was a dumb idea, but they also probably don't think it's a good idea for Russia to be defeated in a major war. But that's just theoretical philosophizing, in practice most of them do not want to serve on the front.

I will be back if I hear something credible about this movie.....which given the circles I run is entrely possible.

As we all know , you have inside information we’re not privy to. I have complete and total trust as to your knowledge.

So if Ukrainians are so pragmatic why are they fighting a war they know they can’t win?

They can win..maybe. the question is at what cost.
But then Zelensky has been fanatical about taking back Crimea which is a bright Russian red line.
He conscripts more (as does Russia) while refusing to talk. He doesn't have to worry about equipment .
We give him only the best the USA can design and pay for.

But he is paying a blood cost for this stalemate/attrition.
I wonder if he cares i never see the empathetic Zelensky. just the Olive Drab beggar of a president

https://visitukraine.today/blog/197...ll-change-and-how-will-it-affect-mobilisationThe Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has lowered the age limit for conscription from 27 to 25 years.
Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov justified the reduction in the conscription age by the need to replenish the mobilization reserve. Previously, the maximum conscription age was 27 years.

If a man turned 27 and had not served in the army, he could not be forcibly mobilized.
After the law was amended, men aged 25 to 60, even without military service experience, could be forcibly mobilized in wartime.

Drone swarms over Moscow, long range attacks on Crimea...at some point it has to be factored in
the harder you push the more Putin has no other options then a tactical nuke. Like a cornered rat

no. and I am projecting a successful counteroffensive by Uk as well as re-taking Crimea as the "cornered rat"
Thats Zelenskys goal and he will attack as far into Russia as he can - damn the torpedoes
