China takes a very firm line on criminality.

China carries out more executions every year than any other country, with either the gun or lethal injection used.

While murder, drug trafficking and the like inevitably demand the penalty of death, the state also executes other classes of criminals, with both corrupt officials and businessmen fated to pay the ultimate price when convicted.

Executives involved in the notorious tainted baby milk scandal were put to death last year.
 
Executing more criminals is not something a civilized nation brags about.

The US has had too many convicted criminals that were later proven innocent for capital punishment to be acceptable.

And I doubt China's forensic sciences are more advanced than ours, so you stand a better chance of executing innocent people. If you call that progress, then you are welcome to it.

Your culture is far older and I respect and admire that part of China.

But having an older culture does not justify executions on as large a scale as China practices. There is no way in hell that you are avoiding executing innocent people. And there is also no way that political corruption is a capital offense.

Do you? Because you posted that you executed a corrupt executive recently. Obviously the fear of execution did not stop his corrpution.

And you will execute people who were wrongly convicted. We have the most open and fair justice system in the world, and we have done it. By executing far more people you will be executing far more innocent people.

Your society is far larger, that is true. But far more complex? How can you possible make that claim? We have ethnic groups from every corner of the globe and they are allowed equal citizenship.
 
He repented most sincerely before meeting his just fate. Who knows how many have been deterrered since crimes shied away from in trembling and fear cannot be counted?

The notion of "returning like for like" is rooted in China. The majority of the public could not accept that criminals could go free after a few years’ imprisonment.

The bloodlust of a population incited by the press and screaming for vengence is no way to run a country.

Do you actually believe that execution is a proper punishment for someone accepting a bribe?
 
Li Shu, the cousin of a criminal who was sentenced to death in Zhejiang Province, has this to say: "it's hard to take the death but our family was able to cope. My cousin was sentenced to death for rape, robbery and murder in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province in 2001. When he was alive, he caused a lot of troubles. As his relative, I felt that people looked down upon me. When he was sentenced to death, the atmosphere in our family was quite depressing, but we were not that sad. I did not worry about him any more and knew that most people would forget about him soon."

Execution for murder is a far cry from executing corrupt politicians and executives.

I have not said that there should be no capital punishment. But it must be reserved for the most heinous of crimes.

I am often disappointed in the actions of our elected officials.

But I am always proud of the fact that our nation is evolving and learning from our past. I am proud of the fact that we do not execute politicians.

And I am most proud of the fact that I have an equal voice in selecting our leaders.
