🔥New York loses $1 trillion in Wall Street business as firms flee the city

A giant, sucking sound is coming out of Wall Street — and it’s siphoning staggering sums of money out of the Big Apple while handing business to Florida and other states farther south.

Nearly 160 Wall Street firms have moved their headquarters out of New York since the end of 2019, taking nearly $1 trillion — yes, that’s trillion with a “T” — in assets under management with them, according to data from 17,000 companies compiled by Bloomberg. Looking to dodge rampant crime, stiff taxes and an increasingly exorbitant cost of living, 158 fed-up financial firms representing a whopping $993 billion in assets have packed up and left the Big Apple, taking thousands of high-paid employees with them, the data shows.

Anyone wanting to minimize this is part of the problem and deluding you. Anyone wanting to pull up the last 25-40 years of data and ignore the fact that this is since 2019 is just lying. This is a real and recent thing. This adds up. These blue cities are in death spirals and they are doubling down rather than correcting. To say this is "working" to say this is what people want and desire when the word used is FLEEING is really quite a reach. It's literally gaslighting if you are claiming that this is what people really want at this stage.

These are powerful and often wealthy people and if local events could be changed through support of certain candidates or causes, they could and likely have attempted it. Whether through election fraud or manipulation, these wealthy companies and individuals are fleeing blue cities much like how people fled the Eastern Bloc countries or Cuba. Smart people will follow them to freedom. Who's next?

Who is in control of these large American cities?

Far left Democratic Socialist loons control these cities.

The only way to bring back the “shining city on the hill” that once was American is to vote these loons out of office.

It’s past time to tell these far left Democratic Socialist loons that have tried to destroy America, to apologize and self-deport the country that they hate.

The Big Apple is rotten at its core.

And in spite of it all, all the MAGA doomsday reports on NYC, NYC is still not only the leading economic and financial center of America but also the world

What cracks anyone up NYC is supposedly so bad, a sespool, but the MAGA’s leading oracle’s headquarters in right smack in the middle of NYC. And if it is so bad why is Abbott and DeSantis burdening it further by bussing refugees to it, sending helpless people to a sespool, aren’t they the Christian they boast about being?

Well, Anchovies, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

Do you not see the irony that NYC is now turning away the illegals that they once welcomed…a sanctuary city?

They declared their city to be a sanctuary for illegals and now are sending them away and are considering the revocation of their sanctuary city status.

Why can’t they just admit that they were wrong, Anchovies?

There are enough issues where I live that I have little energy to spend on NYC. That said, I don't think there's a whole lot of debate the trajectory of the City hasn't been a positive one over the pass decade. Guliani was a Republican but he was also progressive in many ways and was far from an ideologue. Bloomberg was a Democrat who ran as a Republican but same deal, very pragmatic and not an ideologue. This was the time period when NYC was considered the safest big City in America.

Not the case anymore. DiBlasio was an ideologue and crime increased, quality of life decreased and its not really picked up under Adams. And while NYC will still be the financial capital it doesn't mean companies aren't leaving and that it doesn't have a material effect on the City budget. It's like any City, country, organization, team, individual - you can be on top but if you become complacent you can either be knocked off from that top level or find yourself being caught from behind very quickly.

When it comes to voting in cities like New York and San Francisco it's far more about pragmatism and getting things done vs. putting ideologues in office. Too much of the latter is when trouble arises.

They aren’t sending away anyone, rather stating they can no longer provide housing, which is a law in New York

NYC is still one of the safest cities in America, in the world, and please, don’t do what the MAGA do and start sending lists of small municipalities that are supposedly safer.

NYC rides trends, always has, and although it is still feeling the effects of post Covid, it is not going anywhere, it can lose companies, and consequential funds, but it is big and robust enough to absorb the loss. If the same happened to say your SF, or any big city, its effects would be much more devastating

It has nothing to do with MAGA. You're falling into the same ideological mindset/trap these other folks are. The trajectory of NYC over the past decade hasn't been a positive one. That doesn't mean the City is going to the way of Detroit but I find it difficult to think anyone who cares about the City is happy about it. Anecdotal but I've run into enough New Yorkers in SF to hear this story told. Not everyone's life revolves around politics. When people talk about what's going on a City it's not always about what party people should vote for. Fortunetaly, there are still people for whom a conversation can be had that doesn't revolve 100% around that.

The other factor is when talking business/investment. I worked with plenty of folks here who invest in NYC and when they speak about the City and where its headed they aren't speaking from an ideological political perspective. That's when you hear the truth.

I can't say I've looked at NYC finances, but I'm willing to bet they aren't sitting on billions in a stash account. Doesn't matter how much you have, governments spend it. So when you lose revenue it has an effect. Doesn't mean the City is going to go into a doom loop but it has an effect.

MAGA reference was to what usual returns when I tell them NYC is one of the safest cities in the US and world

NYC projection goes up and down, always has, up in the 50’s, down in the 60’s, up since the 80’s, and paralleling out since Covid, regardless, it weathers any storm, and my point is that what is occurring now in NYC is anything but the doomsday armageddon Fox and the MAGA portray daily, still the nation’s defining city

Sure, NYC is not going to go the way of Detroit. But this is your own local paper writing the article and Bloomberg wrote something similar a couple of days ago. Doesn't mean NYC won't rebound at some point in the future but the movement of people and capital from the coasts to the Sun Belt has been a continuing trend. You're free to pooh pooh it but its happening.
