WASHINGTON, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Donald Trump plans to surrender on Thursday in Atlanta in connection with his indictment in Georgia on charges he sought to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state, he said on social media on Monday.

"I'll be going to Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday to be ARRESTED," Trump, who is running for reelection in 2024, said on his Truth Social platform. He described the indictment as a politically motivated effort to derail his reelection campaign.

John Eastman, Trump's former personal lawyer who has also been indicted in the Georgia case, plans to surrender to Fulton County authorities on Wednesday, a court filing showed on Monday. Eastman had reached a $100,000 bond agreement with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis earlier on Monday.

Trump has a dance to do. He has slammed justice and cried about how mean they are to him. It rallies up his followers who do not know better. If he follows the judges' orders, he cannot profit from the court cases in Georgia. Can he do it? Are there some terrible lies he can tell and get away with? Will he have the guts to test the judges?

The Georgia courts will have to walk a tightrope too. Trump will still be campaigning as a presidential candidate. His political speech cannot be censored by the courts and it's likely some of it will mix into these court cases. If the courts push too hard on what Trump can and cannot say in political speech they'll be seen as interfering with the election process, not good for them.

What is this law about election interference you Trump people keep talking about?

If anyone, including the courts, interferes with political speech, or tries to keep a candidate from running, appearing somewhere, or otherwise blocking their attempt to run for office, they're in violation of federal laws on elections and political activities.

For example, Trump announces he is giving a "big" speech somewhere on a specific date, and the Georgia courts tell him, "No, you have to appear here instead," they would be running afoul of laws regarding political activities and election interference. They would have to reschedule the hearing to allow Trump to make his speech. That's one example.

Maybe Trump should not have committed the crimes.

Irrelevant to my point. You are applying, for all intents, Guilty until proven innocent to him. I get you viscerally hate the man, but that doesn't change an objective view. He's running for president, like it or not, and if the courts interfere with that, they are interfering with a national election. I guess you're fine with that, but I'm not. Let the people and process decide the outcome, not the courts.

bye bye

Trump’s legal woes are part of his quasi-religious mythology of martyrdom

The trials are the message. They are the drama around which Trump plays his role as the unjustly accused victim, whose rights are trampled and who is the martyr for his oppressed “deplorables”. He is taking the slings and arrows for them. The narcissist is the self-sacrificing saint. The criminal is the angel. The liar is the truth-teller. If any Republican lapses in faithfulness, they are more than a mere doubter or skeptic, but a betrayer and traitor.

If I were as stupid as you claim to be I would be ashamed of myself.

But that is just me.
