The California Republican Party is set to make major changes to its statewide platform, including a reversal of its long-held opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage as a way to court voters in the Golden State.

The state GOP is set to vote on the proposal that would break from the national party’s position on the two crucial voter issues, according to the Los Angeles Times. The state’s Republican leaders are scheduled to meet in Anaheim for its annual fall convention later this year, during which the party will take a vote on whether to amend its official platform ahead of the 2024 cycle.

California GOP breaking loose.

All politics is local. A lot of people are really unhappy with what's happening in California. Politically speaking if this were on the national level they would just vote the folks in power out. But in California, where Democrats so thoroughly dominate, that isn't really much of an option. And one of the reason is the social issues like abortion and gay marriage. So people want change but because of the previously mentioned issues, won't vote for any Republicans. Take those issues off the table and now you might see some more competitive races.

I'm sure Democrats in more conservative states deal with the same thing. How does the state party differentiate itself from the national party when trying to win local and state elections? Always a challenge.

Not sure how that will fly with the RNC.

It could cost their candidates a ton in funding from the RNC.

You know what the RNC, and DNC, like more than anything else? Winning candidates. They give out money based on that, not ideological purity

They like winning candidates that will support their platform.

Not those that go against it.

If what you were saying is true they would support any winning candidate and both committees have withheld funding from people that didn't support what they wanted.

I assumed it didn’t need to be said but yes, they will each support hopeful winning candidates of their own party. The RNC and DNC generally don’t give money to candidates of the other party.

There’s not a purity test that says you must rigidly follow a certain list of positions to run for office or we won’t give you money. It doesn’t work that way. What you need to show is that you are a viable candidate with a chance to win. The RNC and DNC don’t have unlimited resources. Therefore they allocate their scare resources accordingly. The RNC is not just sending money to some candidate in California with no chance of winning because they declare themselves pro-life.

You are incorrect.

Those that don't support the party platform do not receive money from the RNC or DNC.

Why would they support a candidate who doesn't support them?

But they will continue to put their heart and into supporting national candidates and federal judges who oppose marriage equality and reproductive freedom.

So in practical terms, this gimmick makes hardly difference.

California is so fucked up even its conservatives want to kill their children.....the good news is the Hispanics will take over the state and they won't put up with that crap.....

You are incorrect.

Why would they support a candidate who doesn't support them?

So you think the RNC, or DNC, would rather be ideologically pure and continually lose rather than fund candidates who can win?

This attitude explains why the Republican Party is almost non existent in the state. However fortunately, it looks like a change will be made.

That is what politics is.

You support people that push your agenda.

If you don't then they don't support you.

This isn't rocket science here.

So no Republican candidates who receive money from the state or national party would ever have a policy disagreement because every single candidate must agree on every issue.

Somehow I don’t think it works that way.

It depends.

Ask Blake Masters in Arizona where they pulled money from his senate run.

The article is about the California Republican Party. This is about those running for statewide office. A Senate seat is not a statewide office.

The RNC funds national congressional, senate and presidential races. It’s not focused on state seats in California.

To your point, this isn’t rocket science.
