The judge overseeing special counsel Jack Smith's Jan. 6 case against Donald Trump issued a protective order against the former president following a hearing Friday in which she cautioned Trump against making "inflammatory statements" about the case and said that his First Amendment rights are "not absolute."

"Mr. Trump, like any American, has a right to free speech," Chutkan told attorneys at Friday's hearing. "But that right is not absolute."

“I do want to issue a general word of caution — I intend to ensure the orderly administration of justice in this case as I would in any other case, and even arguably ambiguous statements by the parties or their counsel,” she said, could be considered an attempt to “intimidate witnesses or prejudice potential jurors,” triggering the court to take action.

“I caution you and your client to take special care in your public statements in this case,” she added. “I will take whatever measures are necessary to protect the integrity of these proceedings.”

“Mr. Trump, like any other American,” has a right to free speech under the First Amendment, she said.

But that right, she added, “is not absolute.”

The judge dismissed the argument made by John F. Lauro, Mr. Trump’s defense lawyer, who complained that the protective order would put “a chill” over his client’s ability to defend himself in the 2024 campaign.

“He is a criminal defendant,” Judge Chutkan said. “He is going to have restrictions like every other criminal defendant” — adding that she was not going to “allow him any greater or lesser latitude than any defendant in a criminal case.”

Pretty much a bullshit ruling, ultimately just a warning saying further action could be taken so Trump is in the same spot he was before.

He would have to say something the judge finds inappropriate before she lays down more harsh penalties so Trump is still free to say whatever he wants.

Looks like she is just covering her ass here.

The main take away from this is that she rebutted Smith's desire to get Trump to shut up.

That is definitely a good sign for Trump in this particular case.

The judge is siding with him.

She didn't put any restrictions on him.

She said she would consider what to do if she felt something he said was extreme.

"I intend to ensure the orderly administration of justice in this case as I would with any other case," Chutkan said. "The more a party makes inflammatory statements about this case which could taint the jury pool or intimidate potential witnesses, the greater the urgency will be that we proceed to trial to ensure a jury pool from which we can select an impartial jury."

Laughable; the Jury pool has already been tainted and convinced that Trump is a criminal thanks to this DOJ leaking like a sieve and the phony media enabling Democratic malfeasance.

Any judge interested in the law would dismiss this case outright for a severe lack of evidence of criminal wrongdoing. But alas, Chutkan is a partisan hack and not interested in the law, but in carrying water for the DNC.
