Chavez: US spy plane violated Venezuela's airspace

By CHRISTOPHER TOOTHAKER (AP) – 11 hours ago

CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez on Sunday accused the U.S. of violating Venezuela's airspace with an unmanned spy plane, and ordered his military to be on alert and shoot down any such aircraft in the future.

Speaking during his weekly television and radio program, Chavez said the aircraft overflew a Venezuelan military base in the western state of Zulia after taking off from neighboring Colombia. He did not elaborate, but suggested the plane was being used for espionage.

"These are the Yankees. They are entering Venezuela," he said.

"I've ordered them to be shot down," Chavez said of the aircraft. "We cannot permit this."

Chavez has accused Colombia of allowing the United States to use its military bases to prepare a possible attack against Venezuela.

Both the U.S. and Colombia have denied such allegations in the past, saying the U.S. military presence is for the sole purpose of combating drug trafficking.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy said the mission had no information about any flyover and had not been contacted by Chavez's administration.

Let the invasion begin...

LOL. The US doesn't care enough about Venezuela to invade. That's just silly.

I do find it interesting that nobody posted about Chavez's takeover of another radio station that used to play Salsa music and in between dance songs the dude would talk politics... I guess his mediocre and mostly ambivalent criticism was too much for Chavez to bear....

It looks like his star rose and then fell quickly here. People used to talk about him, now he's like Paris Hilton.

And what would you be saying if Venezuelian aircraft had flown into US airspace with out authorization? Sounds like ya'll have a double standard to me. It's this parternalistic double standard you guys have that is the chief reason why most of Latin America does not trust the US and can you blame them? It's hypocritical as hell.

I doubt seriously that we are overflying the nation without permission, while we could with planes he'll never even have a shot at taking down. They are not a military threat to the US, we wouldn't be overflying them. And nowadays it is mostly unnecessary with satellite imaging.

I'll bet he is claiming more of the ocean than is legal per international agreement and saying we are overflying that, like North Korea does.

I'd go damn!!

I didn't realize that anyone had that many bi-planes. :cof1:
