Soviet expansion which was taking Eastern European countries or installing communist governments following WWII. At least according to NATO and all the history books.

What is your "real" reason it was created?

NATO was created on the understanding that if any of it's members came under attack from anywhere that they would all commit to the absolute defense of the nation under assault.

It had nothing to do with expansionism and that holds true today.

Right. And why did they create that collective security agreement to come to the aid of the others? Because they feared the Soviets might continue their expansion like they did in Eastern Germany, Hungary, Poland, Czhekoslovakia, Bulgaria, Albania........
