Former Labor Secretary Robert Reich explains in a new video why he believes Republican claims of patriotism don’t ring true.

Reich said Republicans routinely oppose reforms that would benefit the majority of Americans, attack cities and rural areas, harm the land they claim to love with the rolling back of environmental regulations and even shun democracy itself.

“It’s time to stop letting Republicans claim the mantle of patriotism without actually being patriots,” said Reich.
“Now is the time for the rest of us to reclaim patriotism and affirm its true meaning,” the former Cabinet secretary concluded.

After January 6 & the reaction to it - they don't even have a claim to a teeny tiny bit of it.
I don't consider most of the right to be patriotic. At all. They're a cult now.
The WOKE who have overthrown the Constitution are not patriots....they have sold their souls to UTOPIA.
...which is to be Goon from the Gestapo out to persecute political dissidence, especially Trump.Smith is a lifetime Justice employee who is just doing his job.
He never had any.He has never had aspersions about his honesty.
No crime. Hallucination.Trump has had thousands of them. Trump is the crook,
...which is to be Goon from the Gestapo out to persecute political dissidence, especially Trump.and Snith is just a justice department employee doing his job.
MEMBERS who argue in catch words are not debaters....they have sold their minds to POLITICS.
...with Utopia being hell on Earth (yet again).
There is no debate here. Only conversations.
Smith is a lifetime Justice employee who is just doing his job. He has never had aspersions about his honesty. Trump has had thousands of them. Trump is the crook, and Snith is just a justice department employee doing his job.
Presidential speaking style changed after JFK.
Orating went out of fashion, not for the better,
and the more casual speaking style became the protocol...for all presidents.
It is directly parallel with the clothes.
JFK was the last president inaugurated while wearing a formal morning suit [the kind that undertakers used to wear].
I was married in one of those. Etiquette still mattered to my family.
After that, every president has been inaugurated in a regular business suit.
That was the point in history when America decided that it didn't want to have any small measure of class and dignity anymore,
and populism started to spread its poison roots.
Do you have a problem with patriotic parades and celebrations?
Not at all, but a parade is pleasant entertainment, not patriotism, from my point of view.
To me, patriotism is trying to fix the multitude of broken things that plague our nation,
and those who don't agree as to what's broken and what isn't
will probably have different takes on patriotism as well.
We call ourselves a diverse nation,
but from my point of view,
we're more importantly a polarized nation.
Assuming that both major factions are sincere,
there will be no mitigation of this reality.
Ok thanks... I think patriotism is many things and obviously I think a parade and holiday activities are ways to show how much this country and being patriotic means... such activities show the exact opposite of the polarized nation that you mentioned... it's an opportunity for everyone to come together and remind us all of what's important... but I guess if you don't go to parades and celebrations it might be impossible to realize that.. (and I'm not referring to you... but I think it's kind of impossible not to feel Pride for America and patriotism when you hear an amazing marcing or mulitary band play The Star-Spangled Banner....)
My birth certificate says that I'm American.
My birth certificate is a notarized piece of paper.
23 and Me says that I'm Italian.
23 and Me is actual DNA testing.
Blood, not paper.
I think those of us without a lot of diverse genealogy are more aware of our specific ethnicity
and thus hold it up as importantly as our nationality.
That does not mean that I take my nationality with a grain of salt. I do not.
I never miss an election.
After college, I answered my draft notice,
because even though I was totally opposed to the war,
I would not denigrate my family's dignity by running away,
and I was honorably discharged without ever getting into trouble.
I was completely miserable the whole time, however.
I think that America is as fine a tract of real estate as exists on this planet.
My fear is that its inhabitants are not necessarily compatible.
Politics are not unimportant
because laws and tax codes determine as much as anything
how we live.
Both major ideological factions in this nation
are genuinely aggrieved by ideologically incompatible people
taking part in determining their laws and tax codes.
That is why I have concerns about the continued viability of the republic.
A small example:
You very sincerely believe that abortion is murder.
I very sincerely believe that making it unavailable is misogyny of the cruelest, most sadistic kind.
While we don't wish to fight about it,
neither of us can begin to imagine how the other's mind works.
This is one small issue.
It's one of innumerable similar issues, however,
that collectively guarantee half of the nation will always loathe the nation's present government.
Who feels like celebrating under those circumstances?
It's just not in my nature.
... how did I do it? My parents taught me what was important...
