The Espionage Act and what it means for Donald Trump.

The Espionage Act is an anti-spy law enacted by Congress shortly after the start of World War One.

The statute criminalizes a broad array of conduct related to the mishandling of sensitive government records connected to the "national defense," a term generally referring to military records that if disclosed could damage U.S. national security.

The trials will probably not go there. Trump bragged about showing super secret documents to people, thinking it made him cool. But they have many other crimes that are easier and less dramatic to nail him on. He has potentially a century in jail if he gets max sentences.

You don't have to prove the person showed it to a foreign enemy.
