AP sources: Dems reach deal to drop gov't-run plan

WASHINGTON – After days of secret talks, Senate Democrats tentatively agreed Tuesday night to drop a full-blown government-run insurance option from sweeping health care legislation, several officials said, a concession to party moderates whose votes are critical to passage of President Barack Obama's top domestic priority.

In its place, officials said Democrats had tentatively settled on a private insurance arrangement to be supervised by the federal agency that oversees the system through which lawmakers purchase coverage, with the possibility of greater government involvement if needed to ensure consumers of sufficient choices in coverage.

Additionally, the emerging agreement calls for Medicare to be opened to uninsured Americans beginning at age 55, a significant expansion of the large government health care program that currently serves the 65-and-over population.

I've supported opening up Medicare all along. Allowing those 55 and over in will reduce the cost per patient because it lowers the average age of Medicare coverage. In addition, because it will take that segment out of coverage by private carriers it removes the most expensive segment of their coverage allowing them to reduce policy costs to those below 55. I haven't read it yet, what does the 'Just Say No' GOP have to say? I think I know the answer in advance.
I haven't read about it yet so I'll withhold judgement.

Why stop at 55?

It's still stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. We should call Obama Robin Hood. That said at least boomers get the most benefit, we deserve it.

They might as well just kill it all together then. With out a public option the reform would be worthless. Once again K-Street wins out over the best interest of the American People.

If he has under 8% unemployment and 3.5 GDP he'll get reelected, anything less and you could be looking at NEWT'S kids taking over. Niether of us want that.

You forget about how dumb the parties can be. No reasonable person thought after Bush's first term that he stood a chance of getting re-elected.....but then the Dems nominated Kerry.

Obama can completely tank. Post the Communist manifesto in the oval office and publically kiss Louis Farrakhans feet and still get re-elected if the Republicans nominate Sarah Palin or someone just as lame.

No I haven't, when's the last time you heard me praise republicans. Jesus, nobody on the left can critisize the one. Shit I want the bullshit wars to end and Obama is a warhawk.

Remember, I the wigger Rasta on the board. They'd have to lower the defenition of rich down to a buck fitty form 250 to get me to even look at the stench that is the republican party.
If we don't critizise our own party, we'll wind up as shallow drowns with zero diversity just like the fossil fat white party ahhh I mean republicans.

I believe I heard in earlier discussions about the possibility of an expanded Medicare that those 55 and over would have a choice to BUY into the Plan. My wife will at the drop of a hat because she has seen my Medicare is superior to her BCBS.
Insurance of any kind is the non-claimers paying for the claimants, that's what insurance is. I prefer to pay for all of my insurances and not claim on any, and I don't resent those that have to make claims, so call me Friar Tuck.

Insurance is a voluntary service provided by companies, I have no problem with it until it's mandated.

Actually, insurance is a client paying a small fee in return for a provider taking a gamble to payout for an unforeseen condition beyond the client's control.

Medicare IS voluntary and the newly added 55-65 group will have their choice to join or not, also, it will not be free to them. As I said earlier, my wife has had a chance through experience to compare her BCBS to my Medicare and she'll make the change at the drop of a hat. My care is better for less and I have more and better choices with providers.

Again the 'rats have bastardized the English language to suit their socialist agenda.
