What is woke about the lil mermaid?

So you’d have been cool with it if they had changed the name?

Did the original movie follow exactly the Hans Christian Andersen story?

No. Surprisingly all the Trump tuckers refused to complain. Probably because most are only semi-literate and never read the original story: http://pinkmonkey.com/dl/library1/tale056.pdf

Disney’s recreation of Hans Christian Andersen’s stories, like “The Little Mermaid,” altered their meanings and changed Andersen’s portrayal of women, in particular. Disney’s versions—lighter and often with a happy ending—erase the original passion and anguish that are the backbone of Andersen’s stories. These films lead many people to believe they are watching the recreation of the real story when they actually present quite a different story from Andersen’s.

Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”—produced by Walt Disney Studio in 1989—tells the story of a rebellious teenager who wants to marry the handsome prince on land to fulfill her materialistic desires: marriage to a perfect man. In this sense, the Disney film suggests that women’s lives and desires revolve entirely around the intent of marrying the handsome prince and, in turn, taking away the agency of women and leaving their desires and choices in the hand of a man....

...Disney has “turned the Little Mermaid into a vehicle for the corporate American worldview which Disney studios themselves have helped to shape since the 1930s” (Bendix 289). As Bendix mentions, Pauline Kael argues that the Disney version is vapid and stale in comparison to Andersen’s much more meaningful and intricate look into real heartache, desire, and sacrifice of the little mermaid. The problem with Disney’s adaptation of Andersen’s story is that both stories sketch two completely different plots (Bendix 281).

Because that is not the way the character was originally envisioned, intended or created...

Disney's Little Mermaid franchise is based on the 1837 fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen which was written before there was film, photography, television, or movies. In a book your mind is free to imagine the character anyway you want.

Apparently some people have missed the classic animated version...... the one truly loved by children and adults everywhere...

$10 says RWNJs think all the "good" characters are white. :)

I doubt anyone here has ever read the 1837 fairytale Disney based it's movies on, and neither have I. I was just reasonably confident that Little Mermaid was not an original Disney creation and must have been based on old children's fairy tales.

I posted the original story here plus differences between it and Disney movie: https://www.justplainpolitics.com/s...e-about-the-lil-mermaid&p=5654772#post5654772

I've read a few of his tales but not that one yet.

Since none of us have read the original 1837 fairy tale, we are not in a position to claim the original conception was messed with. More importantly, 21st century film makers have artistic license to reimagine 200 year old fairy tales.

I doubt most of the Frankenstein movies were faithful to the original 1830 book by Mary Shelley.

I rather doubt that this and the wokeredo of the original lyrics are going to make Disney history...lol... or that kids are going to be rewatching this over and over as they have with the animated feature.. those are what Disney does best and those are what Disney should stick to doing...

The other link discussed the differences between the story and the Disney cartoon.

Agreed on Shelley. I did read her book, although it's been over four decades. The main memories I have are Frankenstein's creation being articulate, not grunting like the original movie (which I'd seen first), leaving an ice floe at the end and all the main characters, other than the creature, died. Are real downer for a high schooler. Mark Twain was funnier. LOL

I have and it isn’t. Not even close.

Wanna bet teach?

How long ago (in decades) was that happening?

In the 1950's?

Do two wrongs make a right?

Since when?

Are you enjoying life 100 years ago?

Talk about stupid.

Woke stupid.

From the very beginnings of Hollywood and TV (visual mediums) up until TODAY.

The vast, VAST, majority of tv and movie WOKE pandering is still directed at males (particularly white males) and always has been.

And i do not think it wrong. If you are a movie maker in Bollywood catering to mostly Indian buyers then pandering to Indian audience by casting Indians, even to play foreign roles is fine.

There are For Profit businesses and for over 100 years the main buyer and decision maker was over whelming the white male, and thus why Hollywood woke pandered to them. That is fine. Now as more PoC and women are buying Hollywood is woke pandering a percent of their media to them... and that is fine.

Only the dumbest derps get offended and cry saying 'how dare you try to appeal to other groups who are not white men, so they also will buy', when it is just done with a percent of the material.

For Profit businesses of all kinds will look out and try to see who is making the buying decision and then cater the product to that person. that is how things work.
