Let's not forget on Memorial Day: someone who served as CIC said this about brave soldiers who put themselves in harm's way for this country, and went through the ordeal of being a prisoner of war.

And he's the frontrunner for the GOP in '24. For a voting base who USED to proclaim that they were more pro-military than the other side.

The widow of Army Sgt. La David Johnson, one of the four U.S. soldiers killed in a military operation in Niger earlier this month, says President Trump's condolence call only made her feel worse.

Families of fallen service members have been thrust into the spotlight in ways they never have before, says Bonnie Carroll, president and founder of TAPS, which stands for Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, a charity that offers services to Gold Star families.

"Grief is a very private matter, and for our families when they suffer the loss of a military loved one, there is a public mourning that occurs," Carroll tells Here & Now's Alex Ashlock. "The conversation has shed a light on the service of our men and women in uniform, and then especially, on the sacrifices that are made by those who serve and by the families left behind."
 
Trump told her "that 'he knew what he signed up for, but it hurts anyways,' " Johnson recalled. "It made me cry, because I was very angry at the tone of his voice and couldn't remember my husband's name."

Despite his lack of military service, Trump has a history of criticizing service members. When he was running for president, Trump said Sen. McCain was only a war hero "because he was captured," referring to McCain's five and a half years in captivity after being shot down over North Vietnam.

"I like people that weren't captured," he said.

Khizr Khan, whose son Capt. Humayun Khan was killed during the Iraq War in 2004, gave an impassioned speech denouncing Trump on the final night of the Democratic National Convention — just an hour or so before Hillary Clinton took the stage.

Brandishing a pocket Constitution, Khan hammered Trump’s proposed ban on Muslims entering the U.S. and asked what Trump has sacrificed for his country.

“Go look at the graves of brave patriots who died defending the United States of America,” Khan said, addressing Trump. “You will see all faiths, genders and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing and no one.”

Khan’s wife, Ghazala, stood by his side while he spoke but did not address the crowd.

The speech gained widespread buzz as one of the most compelling performances of the convention.
 
There is no honor, or shame, in being a POW. A nation shouldn't reward failure, but it shouldn't penalize it in the case of POW's either.
 
You are saying you prefer that the enemy kill them instead of taking them as prisoners idiot

Yes. Absolutely. It is rare in warfare for individual soldiers to surrender to the other side successfully. They usually end up dead instead. Most POW's are created by a mass surrender of one side to the other. Whether that comes from a failure of leadership, planning, or execution of plans, it happens. One exception to this in modern warfare is found in aerial combat. This often takes place over enemy territory, and when the aircraft being piloted is shot down (eg., fails to complete its mission) the pilot (and crew) often survives and is captured.

In every case, it is failure at the heart of how POW's come to be. You don't become a POW because you won the battle or the war.

If you pin a medal on a POW for becoming one, you are rewarding failure. That doesn't mean you should penalize those that became POW's not through their own volition either. They were just unfortunate enough to end up captured. That happens in war.
 
If he disdains the ones who were captured, imagine how he feels about those who failed by being killed. This from a guy who fabricated a condition to avoid service.
