The truth is several people made it clear to Trump what the procedure for classifying is, and that he did not follow it. Everyone who comes into the Whitehouse gets the speech and how to treat classified documents is part of that. Trump cannot abracadabra everything into being non-classified. Trump knows he cannot win this case and a few others. He is begging to get special treatment.

It appears that investigators have proven trump knew the correct way to declassify documents, and that he knew that he was taking classified documents. He also moved them around when the documents were ordered returned, but did not return them. He was given repeated chances to do the right thing, and refused.

Arguing intent is usually a weak defense, but trump is free to try it. Obviously, he has to admit to the actions of the crime to claim it was an accident. Any continued coverup just proves intent.
