Most of them aren't Catholic, and those that aren't consider Catholics to be "Idol Worshippers". They see this and just don't think it applies to them. There are a great many less Catholics (bad wording, much fewer Catholics) around since we first began to read reports of this kind of thing in this timeframe. However, suddenly acting "surprised" at more places in the same time period acting the same as the other places following church policy is pretense.
I'm sure we'll find more from this timeframe as the Catholic Church had a policy to hide them rather than to deal with them as they should be dealt with. This policy led to more pedophiles entering the Priesthood as they understood that they would be protected.

My fourth grade teacher was in prison for this by the time I joined the Navy. I only know because it was mentioned in my background investigation for my SCI clearance, they were going to question him (they questioned all my teachers... very thorough our government) but they did not, and it was mentioned.
I have no idea how many kids have been abused in the school systems, but I am certain it rivals the church as they seemed to have a protection policy there too. Teachers moved...

However there are about 1.3 billion Catholics so when you take the number of assaults you will see that overall it is right on par with any other religion

My Spanish teacher was openly grooming girls seemingly without fear of repercussions. I only really understood what was happening in hindsight That was the 1970s, so hopefully pedophiles are rooted out a little more aggressively
