Donors kick in $1.2 million for NYC subway chokehold suspect Daniel Penny defense fund By Mark Stamey and Larry McShane New York Daily News • May 13, 2023 at 5:50 pm

An online defense fund to cover legal costs for accused subway chokehold suspect Daniel Penny climbed above the $1.2 million mark Saturday with pledges from thousands of donors. Lawyers for the ex-Marine charged in the May 1 killing of homeless victim Jordan Neely aboard an F train beneath Manhattan started the campaign for their client, with more than 20,000 people contributing. “They should donate more for his defense,” said Queens mechanic Steven Sonego. “The poor guy was trying to help.”

One anonymous donor pledged a $10,000 gift, while most offered far more modest financial support for the man facing charges of second-degree manslaughter in Neely’s death. “Don’t give up or give in. God bless you. The world is pulling for you!” wrote one $50 supporter. Daniel Penny is escorted from the Fifth Precinct stationhouse in Manhattan's Chinatown on Friday. A second $50 backer expressed similar support for Penny: “Thank you for serving our country and thank you for serving the citizens on that subway. You stepped up to the call of duty in both cases and justice will be served.”

Excellent.

Like in so many other instances where thugs resist arrest or restraint, this thug would be alive had he not threatened others and resisted restraint.

A man who was arrested 43 times, who beat up two women smashing the bones in their face walking around a train saying he was going to kill people and he didn’t care if he got shot or arrested is not a threat in your world?

It was two black guys holding Neely down, funny how NY didn’t charge them with anything

They did not strangle him. That makes a huge difference. One that I thought you could understand. Penny killed him when he was down and harmless. But he had his chance to kill him and did not want to pass it up.

Have you ever seen a submission strangle in an MMA fight?

They go all out until the ref stops it, if they do it half assed then they don’t subdue their opponent.

In real life there are no refs to stop it.

Now let me ask you this; if you are out with your family and some man approaches you and says he is going to kill your family and that he doesn’t care if the police show up and shoots him are you just going to gently push him away because you don’t want to hurt him or will you go all out to protect your loved ones?
