Why in the hell is a ten year old child working period?!!

New YorkCNN —

Two 10-year-old children were found working at a Louisville McDonald’s restaurant — sometimes until 2 a.m. — the US Department of Labor said Tuesday.

The revelation was part of an investigation into the child labor law violations in the Southeast. The agency also found three franchisees that own more than 60 McDonald’s locations in Kentucky, Indiana, Maryland and Ohio, “employed 305 children to work more than the legally permitted hours and perform tasks prohibited by law for young workers,” the Labor Department said in a statement.

“Investigators from the department’s Wage and Hour Division found two 10-year-old workers at a Louisville McDonald’s restaurant among many violations of federal labor laws committed by three Kentucky McDonald’s franchise operators,” the release said. “Investigators also determined two 10-year-old children were employed – but not paid – and sometimes worked as late as 2 a.m.”

Tiffanie Boyd, senior vice president and chief people officer at McDonald’s USA, told CNN: “These reports are unacceptable, deeply troubling and run afoul of the high expectations we have for the entire McDonald’s brand. […] We are committed to ensuring our franchisees have the resources they need to foster safe workplaces for all employees and maintain compliance with all labor laws.”

I am left wondering how many restaurants/franchises involved had the same owner(s)...............normally company owners are real good at avoiding child labor run ins

McDonald’s franchisees fined after 305 minors, including 10-year-olds, found working illegally

The news comes as Republican lawmakers have targeted child labor laws nationwide. This week, GOP state lawmakers in Wisconsin circulated a bill that would allow 14-year-old workers to serve alcohol in bars and restaurants. Republican-led bills have also been pushed in states like Arkansas, Iowa and Ohio that would make it easier for teenagers to work longer hours and more jobs.

Labor Department investigators discovered two 10-year-olds working unpaid as late as 2 a.m. at a McDonald’s location in Louisville, Kentucky, operated by Louisville-based Bauer Food LLC, according to a Tuesday release.

It was also in Kentucky where 17-year-old McDonald's employee Louise Ogborn was sexually abused at work back in '04 I believe.

Mickey D ought to just close shop in that commonwealth.

Not paying them is the worse part.

Sounds fishy to me since 10 year olds are too short to use any of the equipment or reach supplies to assemble food.

I’m thinking maybe some parents who didn’t have access to a sitter brought them to work and gave them a broom to keep them busy.

Were they illegals? There have been multiple reports of that happening.

Buckle Up....this dark age will be long and brutal.

From the article quoted in the OP:

Franchisee Bauer Foods LLC confirmed to CNN that the two 10-year-olds allegedly employed were children of a night manager who were visiting their parent at work and were not approved by franchisee organization management to be in that part of the restaurant.

Sounds to me like they weren't so much "employed" as they were in an employee only area of the restaurant.

It does sound like maybe they were with the parent who couldn't get childcare....not the best decision to have them at the restaurant, but perhaps a better decision than leaving them home alone until 2 AM...

interesting......I go to a Thai restaurant where mom is the cook and dad runs the front......in the summer their two kids sit on a couch behind the counter messing around on their tablets........I wonder if I should report them for child labor......

Big companies are really good at legally isolating themselves, by having franchises. Those franchises do all sorts of crazy things.
