apr 30 2023 Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is getting criticized for identifying the victims of a Friday mass shooting in Cleveland, Texas, as "illegal immigrants" in the same statement in which he offered condolences to their loved ones.

"This is despicable. I would have thought bringing up the immigration status of the innocent victims of this senseless violence would be beneath even you. But I was wrong," George Takei, the "Star Trek" actor who lived with his parents in internment camps during World War II, wrote on Twitter.

"Five human beings lost their lives and Greg Abbott insists on labeling them 'illegal immigrants,'" Julián Castro, the former Housing and Urban Development Secretary, said.

The Immigrant Legal Resource Center said Abbott's statement included "dehumanizing anti-immigrant rhetoric."

Abbott is being critiqued cause there was no reason to bring up the status of the victims, especially when it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, in fact, one of them has been listed as a legal resident

The Sheriff who is involved said it best, “My heart is with this 8-year-old little boy. I don't care if he was here legally. I don't care if he was here illegally. He was in my county. Five people died in my county, and that is where my heart is—in my county, protecting my people to the best of our ability. ”

Besides, if you want to believe the other, just goes to show yet again, anyone can get a gun in America

Why is there a lie in the subject line? Abbott was wrong on at least one of the people, but now I'm hearing it's more. The man whose wife and child were killed owned his home for 4 years. And called the police 5 times that night.

It's horrible that those people died. I hope they catch this beast and hang him.

Abbott went out of his way in his supposed condolences to add that those murdered were illegal, which as I noted, hasn't even been officially established yet, which makes Abbott a hypocrite, he didn't give a rat's ass about those slaughtered but took the occasion to make a political point
