ISW assessed that Russia‘s missile campaign to degrade Ukraine‘s unified energy infrastructure definitively failed and that Russian forces appear to have abandoned the effort.

Russian forces maintain the capability to renew their missile campaign if they desire, and Russian forces may employ these tactics in order to conserve their stocks of high precision missiles in the event of a renewed missile campaign.

The Russians were not trying to take out the energy system, they were working to exhaust Ukraines missile stockpile, degrade the air defense system. This is likely partly on Chinese orders but Russia can take it out at will.

Ukraine is losing the war and badly despite what the press says. They are barely being kept afloat by outside support but no country seems willing to jump in on their side fully.

For better optics Russia has chosen to wear them down instead of all out war and eventually Ukraine will surrender to them.

No, they were trying to take out Ukranian water and energy grids, and Kremlin propagandists and their MAGA allies were even openly giggling about the prospect of freezing Ukrainian civilians into submission over the winter

Putin's own stated goals for his war were the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine.

That means he saw victory as the elimination of Ukraine's armed forces and the replacement of it's government in Kyiv by Russian vassal proxies.

Putin is not even remotely close to meeting the requirements of what he called victory. Ukraine's armed forces are more powerful now than when Putin invaded, the government in Kyiv is still there, and at the cost of enormous amounts of blood and treasure Putin only controls a strip of land along the shores of the Sea of Azov

The best thing the Ukrainians can do is to keep sending Russians home in body bags. It will the be Russians who decide to keep Putin and keep losing Russians or to stop the carnage.

Putin's days are numbered. Usually a corrupt and inept criminal oligarchy has a shelf life, but be might manage to hang on a few more years

I’m not so sure. IMO, this is more of a war of attrition with the Ukrainians waiting to see how many body bags it will take to drive the Russians home.

Hopefully so on Putin, but IDK. I’m surprised he’s lasted this long. The whole nuclear war threat should have made many Russian leaders uneasy.

Russia lost when it failed to win more than a year ago. What’s been happening since then is Putin desperately trying to save face.

Why are so many rightists (with a few honorable exceptions) rooting for a war criminal? I don’t suppose they actually want to see a regime of massive kleptocracy and state repression thriving. But they are willing to look the other way as long as Putin makes the right noises about issues that REALLY matter to them, like “woke”.
