The judge has already ruled on the motions for dismissal. When the trial starts each side does an opening statement to the jury. There is no motion to dismiss at the start of a trial when the jury is being selected. There are no motions to dismiss after the jury is first seated. The next time a motion to dismiss will occur is at the end of the trial before it goes to the jury. At that time the defendant can submit a motion asking for dismissal because the evidence presented is not nearly enough. It is rare for a judge to dismiss before the jury rules on the case at that point.
This is a civil suit that hinges on the jury finding if they believe the evidence shows that Trump committed rape. In order for Carroll to win, the jury has to rule that the evidence shows Trump committed rape.
This is not the defamation trial. That trial is currently on hold until the federal court rules on whether Trump can slander someone as part of his job of being President.

Its a trial where the central issue is if a rape happened. I call that a rape trial, if you want it to me more descriptive you could call it a civil rape trial.
Lesson for the super dumb: sometimes a "civil lawsuit" goes to "trial". When it does and when the central issue to be "tried" at the "trial" is whether a "rape" occurred, it is not wrong to refer to the "trial" as a "rape trial".
