Fox spent many millions in lawyer fees and a lot of time fighting the Dominion suit. They ended it because they knew they were guilty and would lose. It is just that easy. They feared a jury giving a lot more money. This settlement keeps them from having to remind the viewers every day that they lied to them over and over for years. Dominion apparently was after the money rather than protecting free speech or punishing dishonest TV liars. Fox badly damaged Dominion's business and reputation. Money will not retrieve that.

They had no credibility. They were concerned about losing viewers to even more dishonest stations. This is not a news station and it never intended to be.Murdoch, in court, said they were entertainment, and competing with ESPN.

Dominium, at least partly settled because, in a settlement, they get paid off immediately. If they went to judgment, Fox could have appealed and dragged it out until everyone at Dominion died of old age. Fox would have ended up with a much bigger payment though. Fox was trying to end their lying being part of the news cycle too.
Dominion did good. Fox settled because they knew they'd lose in the end.
