The allegation is that members of the African People’s Socialist Party were involved in a 'foreign malign influence campaign'

By Dave Decamp

The Justice Department has indicted four Americans, including three members of the African People’s Socialist Party and Uhuru Movement (APSP), over their political views on Russia, a step that has grave implications for First Amendment rights.

The allegation against the Americans is that they were involved in a “foreign malign influence campaign” directed by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB). The DOJ also indicted three Russians related to the case, including Aleksandr Ionov, who was initially charged last year.

Ionov is a Moscow resident who founded the Anti-Globalization Movement of Russia (AGMR), a non-governmental organization. The DOJ claims that Ionov used the AGMR to conduct Russia’s “malign influence campaign” and recruited Americans to spread “Russian propaganda.” The indictment alleges the Russians were involved in a 2019 local election in St. Petersburg, Florida, one city where the APSP is based.

“Russia’s foreign intelligence service allegedly weaponized our First Amendment rights – freedoms Russia denies its own citizens – to divide Americans and interfere in elections in the United States,” said Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen.

Offices and homes affiliated with the APSP were raided by the FBI in 2022 over the group’s connections to the AGMR. Omali Yeshitela, the leader of the APSP who was indicted by the DOJ, pointed out after the raid that his group has worked with organizations around the world for decades.

“At our First Party Congress held in Oakland, California in 1981, we received solidarity statements from organizations and governments from around the world,” Yeshitela wrote in an article published by Antiwar.com in March 2023.

“This helps to give lie to the notion that our connection to a Russian NGO is evidence of an illicit relationship that we would have with a ‘foreign power,'” he said.

Yeshitela strongly denied that his group was working for Russia, and they appear to have been targeted for their political beliefs. The APSP has expressed support for Russia and denounced US involvement in Ukraine, but the group has been speaking out against US foreign policy since it was formed in 1972.

Yeshitela said in the article that he expected to be indicted and that the government would likely use the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) to go after him and his group.

“This is selective prosecution. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee and other Israeli lobbying organizations are seemingly immune from prosecution under the FARA law despite their obvious public function as agents of the Israeli government,” he wrote.

Thanks for proving you are a RUSSIAN BOT once again.

This is not Biden's DOJ. This is America's DOJ!

And America's DOJ is doing what is in the best interest of United States- NOT RUSSIA.

So naturally, the DOJ is busting Russian Propagandists who are breaking the law by interfering in our elections and are not properly registering in accordance to FARA!

So this thread should go over about like a fart in a spacesuit!

shakey shit

last time i looked Americans were free to quote Russian "propaganda" -
to make that a FARA violation is just cover to squelch dissent

What exactly is the nature of this Russian "interfering"? They write stuff and post it in the internet?

And according to the leaks from Airman Teixeira, the U.S. has been putting out its share of propaganda on the Ukraine/Russia war.

yep. but the government can do propaganda while a citizen must file a FARA statement??

"ees bullsheet" as my Russian neighbor ( now a US citizen) would say

How does quoting and commenting on an article from antiwar.com make me a "Russian Bot"?

This is not Biden's DOJ. This is America's DOJ!

It's both, actually. Had this been happening during Trump's watch, the article would probably have been called "Trump's DOJ" instead of "Biden's DOJ".

And America's DOJ is doing what is in the best interest of United States

Only if your concept of America doesn't extend past the elites who run it.

Well said. That is precisely the belief of the herd that enjoys being milked

And just who are the ELITES that run America?

I am here to defend my country- NOT RUSSIA!

The more you attack it- the more I will defend it!

Next!

You may find the following article from 2014 worthy of note:

Study: US is an oligarchy, not a democracy | BBC

From the article:

**
Eric Zuess, writing in Counterpunch, isn't surprised by the survey's results.

"American democracy is a sham, no matter how much it's pumped by the oligarchs who run the country (and who control the nation's "news" media)," he writes. "The US, in other words, is basically similar to Russia or most other dubious 'electoral' 'democratic' countries. We weren't formerly, but we clearly are now."

I can agree that Kieth Rupert Murdoch is a large fraction of the Oligarchy- AND YOU SEE HOW NATURE TAKES IT'S COURSE!

The good guys always win in the end.

America is cracking down on LIES! Try to keep up! Catch the wave!

Catchy soundbite, but in regards to this thread, do you believe that there was merit in indicting the 4 Americans that are the subject of this thread? And if so, on what grounds?

I certainly have had my differences with Rupert Murdoch, but I'm skeptical that he's a large fraction of the American Oligarchy. I certainly haven't seen him mentioned in any article bringing up U.S. oligarchs so far. Here's 2 articles published recently that I found interesting:

Oligarchs: From Ancient Greece to Russia and the U.S. | greekreporter.com

Bernie Sanders: ‘Oligarchs run Russia. But guess what? They run the US as well’ | The Guardian

When I think about our homegrown American oligarchs. I Consider Bill and Melinda Gates, Buffett, Tom Steyer, the Kochs, the Waltons, Michael Bloomberg, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Paul Singer, George Soros, Art Pope, Sheldon Adelson, Penny Pritzker, Pierre and Pamela Omidyar, Rupert Murdoch. They are just a handful of the multi-billionaires who use money to sway presidents, for better or worse. They come from every political corner, and they all use personal wealth to enhance their political clout.

Atop the list of American oligarchs is Donald J. Trump, who used his personal fortune, his connections (known and unknown), and a vast repertoire of unsavory political tactics to become president. Whether or not he qualifies as an evil-doer oligarch depends on the outcomes of various ongoing investigations. Did he use influence and power illegally, or more egregiously than any of his predecessors? Has he used his position as president to enrich himself or his family?

It seems inevitable that some rich people will use their wealth to grow their wealth, and to grab power when they can. It may be just an unfair fact of life that money buys access; the problem is when that access metastasizes into something criminal and corrupt.

Russian and American oligarchs are here to stay. Only through the efforts of an independent Department of Justice, an independent FBI and a courageous Congress can checks and balances secure our democracy.

As voters and citizens, our job is to stay informed, learn all sides of the issues, and find out who stands to gain when a new law or initiative is proposed. Government 101: Money buys access to power, here, there and everywhere.

The Foreign Agents Registration Act (1938) requires agents of foreign principals who are engaged in political or certain other activities specified under the statute to make public disclosure of their relationship with the foreign principal.

If these people cannot be proven to have contravened the law, they will not be convicted. That’s one difference between America and Russia (and indeed Orwell’s Oceania). The law courts do not take orders from the state.

Americans are not free to take money from Russia to spout Russian propaganda without registering as Russian agents.
The articles only refer to funding for
Ionov's movement, according to the prosecution. In 2016, he financed a tour of demonstrations organized by the APSP to support a "petition on the crime of genocide against the African people in the United States".
which isn't payment for services, but compensation to finance the tour.

also the anti-war article

“This is selective prosecution. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee and other Israeli lobbying organizations are seemingly immune from prosecution under the FARA law despite their obvious public function as agents of the Israeli government,”

FARA has become weaponized, the group has been around since 1981. the fact the are anti-war on Ukriane is the clue this selective prosecution at best, and a misaplication of FARA at worse

When you find that you need to misstate the charges in order to make your argument you effectively rebut your own argument.

They were not arrested "for Their Political Views", there being no statute for such an arrest in the first place. They were charged with with "conspiracy to defraud the United States" and with criminally impersonating agents of a foreign government.
