The unified kingdom of Judah and Israel, probably did not exist, but may have existed. If it did exist, with Jerusalem as its religious and political capital, it was only for 70 year period 3,000 years ago. It is at best farfetched.

The Exodus is also farfetched, but what could have happened was Egypt retreated from Israel, leaving the people in Israel free of the Egyptians. Then later Israel was invaded, with the religious elite fleeing to Judah with their myths.

All that being said, Jews definitely came from the southern part of what we now call Israel, and grew to populate most of what we now call Israel by the time of Jesus. Jesus (a Jew), considered it quite normal to live in northern Israel.

By the way, Samaritan have a very good claim on being Israelites, not Judeans.

I don't think any educated and well read person is unaware the TaNaKh is full of embellishments.

But it is also one of the best extant sources of historical information about the Levant in antiquity that we have available to us.

There just is not much information about pre-Babylonian Exile Jews, especially as you go further back. The one thing we absolutely know is they were there. The Levant/Israel/Palestine is the homeland of the Jews.

Most ancient stories have a basis in fact. Let's not forget that there were 2,500 years worth of campfire stories between the story of Genesis and Moses (allegedly) writing down the first five books of the OT. That's more time than between the present and Jesus.

Do I believe the entire OT is a fabricated myth, like some seek to claim? No. Do I believe it's 100% true? No. 50% true? Maybe. I follow the science first. Most cultures have origin stories, and Genesis is one of those.

Before Gutenberg, books were both rare and reserved for either the rich or the religious leadership. If an Israeli nomadic tribe had a book (or scrolls), it was the Torah. The Torah, and Bible, was more than a story of origin and history, it was also a blueprint for a society and dietary guidance in a time of no refrigeration or vaccines.

IMO, it's as silly and ignorant to claim the OT is a complete myth as it is to claim it's the absolute word of God.
