It's due to a myriad of factors. In 1890 the leading cause of death among AMERICANS under 21 (used to be legal age) was not disease - it was STARVATION. By 1920 - starvation was virtually eradicated.

Prenatal care is another massive factor in increasing average life expectancy - though one could argue that homicide from abortion utterly wipes those gains out - however we don't count those deaths.

Everything in the capitalist west has increased the length of life and the health of the population.

Since the basis of the thesis if that Capitalism has caused all environmental damage - it's extremely relevant to point out the fact that what you seek to replace liberty and prosperity with is the actually cause of most environmental problems.
