Auto manufacturers are racing to develop the latest and greatest cars. One trend we’re seeing is the rise of solar-powered cars, but how are these sun-powered machines different from other electric vehicles?
What are electric vehicles?
Electric vehicles (EVs) are battery-powered cars that use electric motors rather than an internal combustion engine for propulsion. When you charge an EV, the electricity gets stored in a large traction battery pack. This electricity gets used by an electric traction motor to drive the car’s wheels.
Gasoline vehicles have internal combustion engines that burn gasoline fuel to drive the wheels, releasing toxic fumes and harmful carbon pollution. These engines also produce noise pollution, or excessive noise and vibration.
Each year these gas-powered cars produce 3.3 billion tons of carbon pollution worldwide. Carbon air pollution traps heat from the sun within our atmosphere, causing the planet to overheat and extreme weather events like hurricanes to intensify.*
It affects our health, too — fumes from car exhaust can cause or worsen asthma and other respiratory issues.
Since EVs only run on electricity, they don’t pollute the air. One study even found that having more EVs meant fewer emergency room visits for breathing problems. And compared to internal combustion engines, electric engines don’t produce nearly as much noise pollution.

I was wondering if automakers of EV's, could make the roof of their vehicles a solar panel that could continually charge the vehicle battery?!!
 
Here is a lie.

"Since EVs only run on electricity, they don’t pollute the air." More than 50% of the electricity they run on is made with fossil fuels. Another thing about the article is that it give the false impression the car could drive continuously for weeks without charging. The truth is you can drive 15-30 miles a day if you have sunny conditions. Otherwise you have to plug into the grid and get some of that fossil fuel electricity.

Solar powered cars add little to the range of an EV, and certainly cannot be relied on to provide power for continuous driving much beyond what the battery charge itself will provide.

For example, a Tesla uses about an average of 34 KW per 100 miles. In order for a solar powered car to achieve that, it would need solar panels that could produce at least 34 KW per 100 miles driven. Let's say that is at 50 mph. That means the vehicle uses 34 KW in two hours. The solar car would have to produce a minimum of 17 KW per hour to keep the battery charged. The high end residential solar panels put out about 400 watts for a rated 1 KW because of poor angling, not being ultra clean, etc. That means to keep your Tesla fully charged as it drives you need about 42 standard residential solar panels putting input to the battery continuously.
Of course, if it's nighttime, solar doesn't work so now you are reduced to the battery range.

In other words, the title of this thread, and the article cited are full of shit.
