A preliminary Congressional Budget Office analysis of the Senate health care legislation finds that the bill will cost $849 billion over the next decade while covering 94 percent of eligible Americans, a Democratic leadership aide told reporters Wednesday afternoon.

The aide would still not get into the bill's specifics -- including whether it would include a public option for insurance coverage and what tax mechanisms would be pay for it. The aide did, however, say that 31 million currently uninsured Americans would be covered under the legislation. The bill would also lower the deficit by $127 billion over the next decade -- "going further than any other bill" -- and by $650 billion during the decade after that, according to the aide.

By keeping the total cost of the bill under $900 billion, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) met one of the conditions set by the Obama White House. The bill, said the aide, is also expected to drastically bend the cost curve in the health care system -- another major Obama objective -- by achieving "almost a trillion dollars in cost savings" within the health care system.

Reid is hoping to officially file the bill and proceed to debate later in the week, but the aide cautioned that it could be pushed to Saturday.

UPDATE: Sen. Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) told reporters outside a caucus briefing that the bill includes a national public option with an opt-out provision for states, a tax on health insurance plans that exceed $8500 for individuals and $23,000 for families and language on abortion that does not go as far as Bart Stupak's amendment in the House. Conrad seemed supportive of the bill but would not fully commit to voting for it, saying he'd like to see amendments added.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, meanwhile, told reporters a cloture vote to bring the bill to the floor for debate (and amendments) is expected on Saturday.

You ready for health care, America? Here it comes. Thank a Democrat.

More insight! The factual arguments are overwhelming. How ever can Dems compete with this breadth of knowledge and incisive counterpoint?

By the way, the CBO predicts that 33 states will opt in to the public option program. That means no south! Horay. Mississippi is the least healthy state in the union, so that's good for the bottom line. It's also great, because the Republicans who refuse to give them access to the program are going to get kicked the fuck out of office when their constituents see how well it works everywhere else.

It is notable that the report doesn't mention that the cutbacks in Medicare aren't in the bill and when those are removed from the figures it far exceeds the "savings" that Reid was so proud of.

This is one dog of a mess at a time we can least afford it.

Of course if it turns into a cluster fuck then the opposite will occur in the 17 states who do. BTW, going back to fuzzy math. There are not 33 States in the south.

Why are you following me everywhere, hypocrite?

And how much is Tutu paying you these days?
:clink:

lol....i make ONE post to you and that is following you around....

do you want to be honest and count the number of posts you've made to me in the past few days? or is this more dishonest onceler surfacing? and why don't you ask her how much she paid for post 8 you idiot

it's humorous that you rag on others posts for lacking a point, when you don't bother making one yourself, well.....except to insult and offer no debate....

hypocrite much?

we can afford it....

as if no medical help doesn't cost this country money....it costs, with emergency care rooms, with people going bankrupt, etc....if the government actually got off its ass and made this work properly, it would work.

Only if it doesn't include a single payer system. If it does not, then it's a piece of dog shit legislation. It looks like it will though. A public option essentially creates a single payer standard. That would save many billions of dollars wasted each year. If it attempts to provide universal coverage with out a single payer system then we are indeed fucked.

good to see your lack of intellect is shining through in your wonderful comments.

Bottom line, this bill is similar to the House bill. It doesn't include the 'fix' that Congress wants for doctors compensation for the Medicaid reductions. The bulk of expenses in the bill don't start until 2013/2014.... but the extra revenues kick in earlier.

Essentially, the Dems are trying to hide their lies about this being deficit friendly.

Not to mention emphasizing improved public health including wellness and preventative programs which a market based system has no use for because it's not profitable. As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. A lot of costs can be saved there.
